Wildcats Take on Jayhawks in Sunflower Showdown

Oct. 20, 2010

MANHATTAN, Kan. – The annual Sunflower Showdown at Tuttle Creek Reservoir is next up for the Kansas State rowing team as the Wildcats look to keep the title in Manhattan after the event was cancelled the last two years due to inclement weather. The action starts at 9 a.m. on Tuttle Creek Reservoir with a total of five races to decide the winner.

Head coach Patrick Sweeney said he is excited to take on the team’s rival as the next assessment point in K-State’s training schedule.

“Our goal at this regatta is to continue monitoring our progress,” Sweeney said. “Racing over the 2,000-meter course adds a bit more pressure to the race situation we had in Oklahoma. The idea now is to add sharpness.”

The Varsity 8 lineup remains the same from racing in Oklahoma. However, all the other boats have undergone some seating changes, enabling the coaching staff to make additional observations of the Wildcats’ racing skills.

“We’re really please with the progress this fall and expect tight races this weekend,” Sweeney added. “Your in-state rivals always turn up looking for a fight, and our squad knows what’s at stake, so the results could go either way.”

Parking and seating at the lake this weekend will be different than years past. Fans driving to the event from Manhattan can get to the boathouse by driving north on Tuttle Creek Boulevard to Highway 13 and turning right. After driving across the dam, take the first left onto Spillway Marina Road. Take the next left to the boathouse for parking on top of the hill. The Breidenthal Boathouse is located at 7560 Spillway Rd. K-State staff will be there to direct parking. The viewing area will be near the finish line this year on the east end of the dam. There will be a shuttle to transport spectators from the parking lot to the viewing area. Vehicles with handicapped tags may park at the viewing area near the finish line at the east end of the dam. Parking at the viewing area is limited to only those who have handicapped tags.
