Cats, Jayhawks Battle in Sunflower Showdown

MANHATTAN, Kan. After facing a regatta cancellation two weeks ago, the Kansas State rowers will again look forward to their second competition of the season as they host Kansas in the lone home event, the Sunflower Showdown. The dual, which marks the final fall event, will take place on Sat., Nov. 10th, from the waters of Tuttle Creek Reservoir with a start at 9:30 a.m.

With the event being scored, the in-state rivals are tied at five wins apiece in the Sunflower Showdown series. The Jayhawks have won the last two events, while K-State won the previous three. The Wildcats took the title in the First Novice 8+, Second Novice 8+ and Varsity 4+ during last season’s clash.

The Wildcats have put together one boat for each of the six races this year, including three varsity and three novice. The Varsity 4+ race will open the event with the Jayhawks fielding two boats with one being exhibition and ineligible to score for Kansas. The Novice team then takes to the water for its 3 events, starting 15 minutes apart and beginning at 9:45 a.m. The Showdown will end with the two featured events of Varsity 8+ races with the final scheduled for 10:45 a.m.

“The two teams (K-State and KU) are pretty evenly matched,” head coach Pat Sweeney said. “Whoever shows up ready to race well on Saturday will be the winner. It could go either way.”

K-State’s last event, the Head of the Iowa, was called off due to continued rains and flooding in the Iowa City, Iowa, area. The Wildcats opened the season at the Head of the Des Moines, where the team captured three titles, in the Novice 4+, Novice 8+ and Varsity 8+.

A recap of the Sunflower Showdown will be posted on K-State official athletic website,, following completion of the event.
