K-State Wins Three Races at Sunflower Showdown

MANHATTAN, Kan. The Kansas State women’s rowing team wrapped up its fall season at the 10th annual Sunflower Showdown on Saturday.  The Wildcats won three of six races against in-state rival Kansas.

The Jayhawks won the first two races of the day as the First and Second Varsity 8+ boats won their races.  The Wildcats’ First Varsity 8+ finished with a time of 7:18.9, four seconds behind KU, while the Second Varsity 8+ (7:30.5) finished six seconds behind the Jayhawks.

“We competed against a very good KU team,” said head coach Patrick Sweeney.  “Overall our Varsity boats did well and will continue to improve for spring.”

The next three races belonged to the Wildcats.  For the third-straight race this season, the First Novice 8+ dominated the competition with a winning-time of 7:23.3, 13-seconds ahead of KU (7:46.3).  The Second Novice 8+ defeated the Jayhawks by four seconds finishing in 7:53.7.

“Novice 8 continues to do well every race,” Sweeney said.”  It’s nice way to finish the fall season.”

The Wildcats Varsity 4+ boat, racing in its first competition this fall, defeated both KU boats finishing with a time of 8:21.0.

The Third Novice 8+ boat finished second (8:14.1) behind KU (A) boat but finished ahead of KU (B) boat by four seconds.
