Huljev Captures 50th, Wildcats Defeat Bulldogs

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Senior Antea Huljev recorded her 50th career singles victory on Sunday, as Kansas State defeated Drake 4-0 at the Body First Tennis and Fitness Center. The Wildcats have now won eight straight matches over the Bulldogs and have opened the season 2-0 for the second straight season.

In doubles play, K-State captured the point with wins at number two and three. The number three pairing of Antea Huljev and Carmen Borau Ramos dispatched of Jessica LaBarte and Earlynn Lauer, 8-3. Huljev and Borau Ramos were paired together by head coach Steve Bietau for the third time this season and the first time since Sept. 24, 2010 at the Hoosier Classic. The duo is now 2-1 this season.

At number two doubles, Ana Gomez Aleman and Nina Sertic defeated the Bulldogs’ duo of Klavdija Rebol and Jessica Aguilera, 8-3. Gomez Aleman and Sertic now possess a 7-4 record together this season and have won three straight.

Huljev made quick work of her opponent, Gabriela Demos, with a straight set 6-1, 6-1 victory at number two singles and to give K-State a 2-0 lead. Huljev now owns a career mark of 50-62, including a 6-4 mark this season.

Karla Bonacic moved K-State’s lead to 3-0 with a straight set win over Jessica Aguilera, 6-1, 6-0, at number three singles. With the win, Bonacic evened her record at 6-6 this season and is 18-21 in her career.

Freshman Petra Niedermayerova secured the win for the Wildcats by fighting through a difficult second set to defeat Manca Krizman, 6-1, 7-6 (2), at number one singles. Niedermayerova has now won four of her last five outings to bring her record this season to 7-5.

Junior Petra Chuda earned her first win of the spring season with a 6-0, 6-2 decision over Ali Patterson at number five singles. Chuda now owns a record of 5-7 this season and a career record of 29-46.

Gomez Aleman dispatched of Klavdija Rebol in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4, for her third win in her last four matches. Gomez Aleman is now 7-7 this season and is 7-6 in two-set matches.

Following a week off, Kansas State will return to action on Feb. 5-6 in Iowa City, Iowa. The Wildcats will face Miami of Ohio at 12 p.m., on Feb. 5 and will challenge Iowa on Sunday, Feb. 6 at 11 a.m.
