K-State Wins 6th Straight, Rolls Past Mean Green

DENTON, Texas – For the second time this season, No. 52 Kansas State women’s tennis defeated a ranked opponent as the Wildcats held off No. 62 North Texas, 5-2, at the Waranch Tennis Complex. The Wildcats are now 6-0 for the first time since the 1989 campaign and for just the second time in school history.

The Wildcats started Sunday with a strong showing in doubles action, sweeping through the three matches to earn the point. K-State head coach Steve Bietau adjusted his pairs with the duo of sophomore Karla Bonacic and senior Antea Huljev leading the way from the number one position with a 8-2 win over Irina Paraschiv and Barbora Vykydalova. This was the first match this season for the Bonacic and Huljev pair, as the tandem combined for a 4-6 mark in 2009-10.

The number three combination of sophomore Ana Gomez Aleman and junior Petra Chuda set down Isabel Bos and Carolina Barboza, 8-5. The combination of Gomez Aleman and Chuda also played their first match together this season, but were 3-1 last season.

To close out the sweep, freshman Petra Niedermayerova and junior Nina Sertic dropped Amy Joubert and Paula Dinuta, 8-5.

In singles action, Niedermayerova quickly gave the Wildcats a 2-0 lead with a straight set sweep, 6-0, 6-0 over Dinuta. Niedermayerova has now won six straight matches to begin her spring season and is now 11-5 overall.

The Mean Green closed the gap to 2-1 with a straight set win at number two singles, but Sertic gave the Wildcats a 3-1 lead with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Bos at number five singles. Sertic has now won four of her last five outings and is 9-6 this season.

North Texas fought back with a straight set win at number four singles, but K-State secured the win as Chuda defeated Barboza at number six singles, 6-3, 6-3. Chuda has now won five straight matches and owns a season record of 9-7.

The afternoon ended with Bonacic coming back to defeat Vykydalova at number three singles, 3-6, 6-2, 6-3. With the victory, Bonacic pushed her career record over the .500 mark, 22-21. The Split, Croatia, product is now 10-6 this season and is 9-2 for her career in three-set matches.

Kansas State will return to Manhattan to host UALR on Saturday, Feb. 19 at 12 p.m. The Wildcats will also host No. 37 Tulsa on Sunday, Feb. 20 at 12 p.m. Both matches will be contested at the Body First Tennis and Fitness Center, located at 3615 Claflin Road in Manhattan. The matches are free and open to the public.
