HUTCHINSON, Kan. – With its ninth win of the 2011 spring season, the No. 45 Kansas State women’s tennis tied the best start in school history as K-State defeated Wichita State on Sunday, 4-3, at Prairie Dunes Country Club. The Wildcats are now 9-1 this season, while Wichita State falls to 6-7. K-State halted a two-match skid to the Shockers and now controls the all-time series, 21-19.

“We had a lot of players step up today and I am really proud of the effort they continue to give,” said head coach Steve Bietau about his squad’s performance. “Antea (Huljev), our lone senior, did a particularly good job. The last four games of her final set were outstanding. She was 2-all and stepped it up in a big way.

“We received contributions from a number of people today. We are dealing with some injuries right now and Carmen (Borau Ramos) stepped in at number three doubles to help us secure that point. Karla (Boancic) and Petra (Chuda) both played tough matches as well.”

Kansas State started the afternoon by winning a hard fought doubles point, 2-1. The Wildcats were forced to use a new combination of sophomore Carmen Borau Ramos and freshman Petra Niedermayerova in the number three position. The duo responded with a 8-1 victory over Montse Blasco Fernandez and Valerie Brockman.

Wichita State rebounded and secured a win at number two doubles, 8-6, but the pairing of senior Antea Huljev and sophomore Karla Bonacic secured the win for the Wildcats at number one, 8-5, over Veronika Blaskova and Carla Venticinque. Bonacic and Huljev are now 4-0 this season and 8-6 over the last two seasons.

In singles action, K-State continued to dominate at the top of the singles’ lineup as the top three positions won and secured the win for the Wildcats. Niedermayerova, No. 123 in the nation, set down Lutfiana Budiharto at number one singles, 6-0, 7-6 (3). Niedermayerova is now 14-6 this season and owns a seven-match win streak in straight set matches.

At number two singles, Bonacic outlasted Blaskova in three sets, 6-2, 3-6, 6-2. The win extended Bonacic’s to 10 this spring and improved her record this season to 14-6. The native of Split, Croatia is now 5-0 in three-set matches and 10-2 for her career in extended matches.

Closing out the victory for the Wildcats, was Huljev who won a hard fought three-set match over Venticinque, 7-5, 6-7, 6-2, at number three singles. Huljev has now played three straight extended matches and has won her last two. The product of Velenje, Slovenia, is now 22-15 in her career in three-set matches and boosted her overall career mark to 56-64.

After K-State had secured the victory, Wichita State registered wins at all three of the lower positions of the lineup. The Wildcats suffered their first loss this season at the number five position at the lineup (7-1), as Delia Damaschin defeated Ana Gomez Aleman, 6-2, 6-4.

Asked if his team is prepared for the upcoming Big 12 schedule, Bietau stated they still need to continue to improve and play better.

“I don’t yet but I am pleased at where we are. We are going to have to lift our level of play to be ready for the conference.”

Kansas State will open Big 12 action on Friday, March 18, as the Wildcats travel to Waco, Texas to face No. 7 Baylor. K-State will continue its opening Big 12 road trip at No. 54 Texas Tech on Sunday, March 20.
