No. 42 K-State Sweeps Past Cal Poly

FRESNO, Calif. – No. 42 Kansas State ended a four-match losing streak on Sunday with a clean sweep, 7-0, of Cal Poly at the Spalding G. Wathen Tennis Center on the Fresno State campus. The 7-0 win on Sunday was K-State’s first sweep of an opponent since Feb. 18, 2012 against Arkansas-Little Rock.

K-State (5-6) captured the doubles point for the first time since Feb. 9 against Tulsa, with a sweep over the Mustangs. The Wildcats are 3-0 this season when winning the doubles point. Pacing K-State’s doubles win was the No. 32 ranked tandem of Petra Niedermayerova and Karla Bonacic. The duo registered an 8-4 win at number one doubles over Alexa Lee and Louise Oxnevad. Niedermayerova and Bonacic are 13-9 this season.

At the top position in the K-State singles lineup, No. 15 ranked Niedermayerova won her 10th match this spring (10-1) with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Oxnevad. Niedermayerova tied her season career-high win total with her 24th win this season (24-6). Niedermayerova, a junior from Brno, Czech Republic, needs one win to set a new career-high for singles wins in a season and move into fourth on the K-State single-season wins list.

For her career, Niedermayerova owns a 72-29 (.713) record and needs five singles wins to move into a three-way tie for second with Petra Sedlmajerova (1999-03; 77-47) and Jessica Simosa (2001-06; 77-61). She needs seven wins to move into a tie for first with Maria Rosenberg (2000-05; 79-54).

At No. 2 singles, Bonacic tallied a 6-1, 6-1 win over Jennifer Cornea. Bonacic owns a career record of 50-18 in dual match action, including a 28-11 mark from the No. 2 position in the lineup.

Dating back to the final three matches of 2010, Bonacic has won 42 of her last 53 dual matches. For her career, Bonacic is sixth in school history for career singles wins with a mark of 66-40 (.623). Bonacic needs one win to move into a tie for fifth on the K-State career singles win list with Alena Jecminkova (67-45; 1999-02).

Freshman Ivana Kubickova won her second straight match with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Lee at number three singles. The product of Brno, Czech Republic, improved her debut K-State record to 18-11 this season, including a 6-5 mark this spring. This was the third time this spring she has won consecutive matches.

Sophomore Amina St. Hill won consecutive matches for the first time since Jan. 18-19 with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Ane McPike at number four singles. The win was St. Hill’s first career win at the number four spot in the lineup (1-4) and improved her record this season to 11-10.

Senior Carmen Borau Ramos ended a personal six-match losing streak with a 6-0, 7-5 win at number five singles over Anna Klavins. Borau Ramos her 10th career win at the number five position in the lineup and her second this season.

K-State will conclude its non-conference trip to California on Monday night, as the Wildcats face No. 61 Fresno State at 7 p.m. (CT).
