No. 42 K-State Chases Down No. 61 Fresno State

FRESNO, Calif. – No. 42 Kansas State pieced together a furious comeback in singles to register a 5-2 win over No. 61 Fresno State on Monday night at the Spalding G. Wathen Tennis Center. K-State registered a perfect California road trip with a 2-0 record and tallied its first back-to-back wins since Jan. 26-27 in Boston, Mass.

With Kansas State (6-6) holding a 2-0 lead, Fresno State (8-5) tied the match at two with consecutive wins at number four and three singles. Senior Carmen Borau Ramos jump started K-State’s rally, as she propelled K-State back into the lead, 3-2, with a hard-fought three-set win over Bianca Modoc, 3-6, 7-6, 6-0, at number five singles. Borau Ramos carded her 11th career win at the number five position in the lineup and her third this season.

Senior Ana Gomez Aleman sealed the win for the Wildcats with a 4-6, 6-4, 6-0 win over Anneka Watts at number six singles. After winning by default on Sunday afternoon, Gomez Aleman tallied her first true match win since Jan. 27 which ended a personal seven-match skid. The product of Murcia, Spain, is 4-0 in her career at the number six position in the K-State lineup and improved to 41-66 in her career.

At No. 2 singles, senior Karla Bonacic put the icing on the victory and registered the third comeback singles win for the Wildcats with a 5-7, 6-3, 6-2 win over Aishwarya Agrawal. Bonacic owns a career record of 51-18 in dual match action, including a 29-11 mark from the No. 2 position in the lineup.

Dating back to the final three matches of 2010, Bonacic has won 43 of her last 54 dual matches. For her career, Bonacic is tied for fifth in school history for career singles wins with a mark of 67-40 (.626).

At the top position in the K-State singles lineup, No. 15 ranked Petra Niedermayerova won her 11th match this spring (11-1) with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Rana Sherif Ahmed to give K-State a 2-0 lead. With the win, Niedermayerova surpassed her season career-high for wins with her 25th win this season (25-6). She is 19-4 this season in straight set matches and 59-16 in her career in straight sets.

Niedermayerova, a junior from Brno, Czech Republic, moved into fourth on the K-State single-season wins list with the win and needs two wins to move into third. For her career, Niedermayerova owns a 73-29 (.716) record and needs four singles wins to move into a three-way tie for second with Petra Sedlmajerova (1999-03; 77-47) and Jessica Simosa (2001-06; 77-61). She needs six wins to move into a tie for first with Maria Rosenberg (2000-05; 79-54).

K-State captured the doubles point on Monday night to open the match for the second straight day. The Wildcats are 4-0 this season when winning the doubles point.

Pacing K-State’s doubles win was the No. 32 ranked tandem of Niedermayerova and Bonacic. The duo registered an 8-5 win at number one doubles over Modoc and Agrawal. Niedermayerova and Bonacic are 14-9 this season and have won three of their last four doubles matches.

The Wildcats secured the doubles point, as Gomez Aleman and Borau Ramos downed Olga Kirpicheva and Watts at number three doubles, 8-5. Gomez Aleman and Borau Ramos have won consecutive doubles matches for the first time this season and improved their record together this season to 2-3.

K-State will return to the Sunflower State to face rival Kansas on Saturday, March 30. The Dillons Sunflower Showdown will take place in Lawrence, with doubles beginning at 1 p.m.
