Gomez Aleman Comes Through Again for Cats

AMES, Iowa – For the second time in a week, Kansas State’s Ana Gomez Aleman sealed a win for the Wildcats as No. 41 K-State held off Iowa State’s upset bid on Sunday at the Forker Tennis Complex, 5-2. The victory improved K-State’s overall record to 12-4 this season, including a 4-1 mark on the road, and 3-3 in Big 12 action. The 12 victories by the Wildcats are the most since the 2003 season and tied for the fifth-most in school history.

Gomez Aleman was able to grind out a three-set win over Simona Cacciuttolo at number four singles, 6-1, 0-6, 6-4, to secure the win for the Wildcats. With Sunday’s win, Gomez Aleman has clinched two victories for the Wildcats in a week’s time as she sealed K-State’s upset over then-No. 25 Texas A&M last Saturday with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Janelle Cuthbertson.

The sophomore from Murcia, Spain, is now 14-12 this season including a 9-5 mark this spring. Her win over the Aggies started her current three-match winning streak which is her second-longest of the spring behind a five-match stretch from Jan. 21-Feb. 13.

The Wildcats started the afternoon by winning the doubles point, with victories at number one and number three. K-State’s number three duo of Gomez Aleman and junior Petra Chuda tallied the first doubles win with an 8-5 decision over Jenna Langhorst and Liza Wischer. Gomez Aleman and Chuda are now 5-5 when paired together this season, including a 5-3 record this spring.

The Cyclones evened the doubles matches at one with an 8-3 win at number two, but K-State’s top pair of junior Nina Sertic and freshman Petra Niedermayerova held off Tessa Lang and Maria Fernanda Macedo, 8-6, to card the doubles’ point for the Wildcats. K-State is now 10-0 this season when winning the doubles point.

Iowa State quickly took a 2-1 lead following a pair of straight set wins to begin singles play. The Cyclones tallied a 6-1, 6-0 win at number six singles, followed by a 6-4, 6-0 win at number five singles.

Niedermayerova put K-State back on the right track from the number one position with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Erin Karonis to tie the match at two apiece. Niedermayerova’s win improved her overall record to a team-leading 18-8, while she is 13-3 in the spring and 4-2 in Big 12 action. The straight set win by the Brno, Czech Republic native was her 15th this season and her third in Big 12 play.

K-State took the lead for good, as sophomore Karla Bonacic came back in the first set to record a 7-5, 6-1 straight set win over Lang at number three singles. Bonacic is now 17-7 this season and owns a team-leading 13-1 mark in the spring including an 11-1 mark at the number three position in the lineup.

After Gomez Aleman closed out her match in three sets, senior Antea Huljev solidified K-State’s win with a come from behind three-set win over Macedo at number two singles, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4. Huljev tallied her 24th career victory in three sets and her ninth win in 12 opportunities this season in extended matches.

Kansas State will close out its 2011 home schedule next weekend with a pair of matches, beginning with Friday’s match against Colorado at 1 p.m. On Sunday, the Wildcats will host Missouri at 1 p.m. K-State will celebrate “Senior Day” on Sunday with a pre-match ceremony to honor the Wildcats’ lone senior, Antea Huljev.
