No. 50 K-State Downed by No. 15 Texas Tech

WAMEGO, Kan. – No. 50 Kansas State opened a season-high four-match home stand on Friday, but the Wildcats’ were unable to pull the upset on No. 15 Texas Tech, as the Lady Raiders held off the Wildcats 5-2 at the Wamego Recreation Complex. K-State falls to 7-9 this season and 1-5 in Big 12 action, while Texas Tech improves to 16-4 overall and 6-0 in the league.

The Lady Raiders secured the early advantage with a pair of doubles wins to secure the 1-0 advantage. K-State is 2-9 this season when dropping the doubles point. The Wildcats lone doubles win on Friday came from the top of its lineup.
At number one doubles, the No. 30 ITA-ranked tandem of Petra Niedermayerova and Karla Bonacic defeated Texas Tech’s top team and No. 13 ranked duo of Kenna Kilgo and Samantha Adams, 8-3. Niedermayerova and Bonacic are 18-9 this season and 5-1 in Big 12 matches. The duo has won six straight doubles matches.

Over the last three seasons, Niedermayerova and Bonacic are 31-25 when paired together. With the doubles win on Friday, Bonacic moved into a tied for eighth in school history for career doubles victories with a 57-57 record. Niedermayerova improved to 56-39 in her career and 23-9 this season in doubles action. Her 23 doubles wins this season are tied for third in school history for doubles victories in a season.

In singles action, the No. 12 ITA ranked Niedermayerova put an end to a personal two-match skid and brought the Wildcats back into a tie at 1 each with Texas Tech by defeating No. 94-ranked Adams at number one singles, 6-1, 6-4. With the win, Niedermayerova recorded her 27th win this season (27-8) and moves her into third in school history for singles victories in a season. She is 21-5 this season in straight set matches and 61-17 in her career in straight sets.

Niedermayerova, a junior from Brno, Czech Republic, ranks fourth on the K-State single-season wins list with a record of 75-31 (.708) and needs two wins to move into a three-way tie for second with Petra Sedlmajerova (1999-03; 77-47) and Jessica Simosa (2001-06; 77-61). She needs four wins to move into a tie for first with Maria Rosenberg (2000-05; 79-54).

Texas Tech recaptured the lead for good with wins at number four and six singles. Both matches were decided in straight sets with scores of 6-2, 6-2 and 6-2, 6-4, respectively.

Bonacic brought K-State back to within striking distance, as she overcame a rough start to defeat Kilgo at number two singles, 0-6, 7-5, 6-4. The win was Bonacic’s sixth straight and boosts her record this season to 16-7, including a 5-1 mark in Big 12 action.

The senior from Split, Croatia, is now 56-18 in her career in dual match action, including a 33-11 mark from the No. 2 position in the lineup. Dating back to the final three matches of 2010, Bonacic has won 47 of her last 58 dual matches. She ranks fifth in school history for career singles wins with a mark of 71-40 (.640).

The Lady Raiders capped the match with wins at number three and five singles. The win at number three singles for Texas Tech came in a three-set roller coaster between K-State’s Ivana Kubickova and Rashmi Teltumbde. Teltumbde held of a late third-set charge from Kubickova to win 1-6, 6-2, 6-3.

K-State continues its four-match home stand on Saturday afternoon against No. 29 Texas at 1 p.m. The match will be played outdoors at the Wamego Recreation Complex in Wamego, Kan., and is free and open to the public.
