K-State Ties School Record with Win over KU

LAWRENCE, Kan. – No. 45 Kansas State gave head coach Steve Bietau a birthday gift on Saturday afternoon with a 5-2 win at the Jayhawk Tennis Center over Sunflower State rival Kansas to close out the regular season. The win tied the school record for overall wins in a single season and was the sixth road win this season, which is the most since the 2003 campaign.

With the win, the Wildcats are 15-6 overall this season to tie the 2003 squad for the most wins in the program’s 35-year history. The win also secured its first winning record in Big 12 action since the 2006 campaign with a 6-5 mark in the league. K-State will enter next week’s 2011 Big 12 Women’s Tennis Championships in Waco, Texas, as the number seven seed.

K-State started the afternoon strong, as the Wildcats swept through doubles’ action to secure the point. It was the first time K-State secured the doubles’ point since April 8 against Colorado and the first time the Wildcats captured the doubles point in a road match since April 3 at Iowa State. Kansas State improved to 12-0 this season when securing the first point of the match.

The Wildcats increased its lead to 3-0 with freshman Petra Niedermayerova and sophomore Carmen Borau Ramos winning at number one and six singles, respectively. Niedermayerova, ranked No. 53 in this week’s Campbell/ITA national singles rankings, improved her winning streak to six matches with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over No. 101 Ekaterina Morozova.

Niedermayerova closes out the regular season as the Big 12 champion at the number one position with a sterling 9-2 record in league play. The product of Brno, Czech Republic is 23-8 overall this season and is tied for fifth in school history for the most wins in a single season. Her winning percentage this season of 74.2 ranks third in school history while she is 18-3 this spring overall at the number one position. She has also amassed a 6-1 record against ranked opponents including a current streak of five straight wins.

Borau Ramos dispatched of Dylan Windom in straight sets at number six singles, 6-4, 7-5. The win marks the first time this spring that Borau Ramos has carded consecutive victories in singles action. She finishes the regular season with a 9-15 record and a 4-6 mark in Big 12 action.

Kansas (9-12, 3-8 Big 12) narrowed the margin to 3-1 with a win at number five singles, but sophomore Karla Bonacic ended any chances of a comeback from the Jayhawks with a 6-4, 7-6 win over Sara Lazarevic at number three singles to clinch the match. The win by Bonacic brings her record this season to 20-9 overall and 16-3 this spring including a 6-3 mark in Big 12 play. The native of Split, Croatia, is 12-1 this season at the number three position in the lineup.

For good measure, sophomore Ana Gomez Aleman improved her career-best winning streak to eight with a come from behind win over Monica Pezzotti at number two singles, 4-6, 6-2, 6-0. This was Gomez Aleman’s first match and win at number two in the lineup and her first win at number two since March 31, 2010 over Lazarevic. This season Gomez Aleman owns a career-best record of 19-12 overall and an 8-3 mark in league action, while the win on Saturday was the 30th of her career (30-34) and her 10th in league matches (10-12).

The win by K-State was the 10th in the series for the Wildcats over the Jayhawks and the fifth in the last seven meetings. This is the first time since the 2005 through 2007 seasons that K-State has won consecutive matches in the series.

The Wildcats will now make preparations for next week’s 2011 Big 12 Women’s Tennis Championships in Waco, Texas. K-State will open action in the first round on Thursday, April 28 at 1:30 p.m., with an opponent to be determined on a tiebreaker.
