LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kansas State women’s tennis made its fall debut a strong one on Friday, as the Wildcats swept through singles action with seven victories and tallied four wins in doubles play at the KU Invitational.
“Overall, I was pleased with what I saw from our team today,” said head coach Steve Bietau of the team’s first action. “We fell short in a couple places, but had a lot of positive performances and a better across the board effort. Carli (Wischhoff) showed a lot of toughness and fight in her singles and definite progress in her doubles with Ivana (Kubickova). I'm excited to see how it goes as we progress through the tournament and things get harder.”

Sophomore Carli Wischhoff battled back from an opening set loss to win in three-sets, which included winning a third-set tiebreak over Rebecca Pedrazzi of Wichita State, 3-6, 7-5, 7-6 (6), to advance to the semifinals of Draw D. This was just the fourth career 3-set match Wischhoff has played as a member of the Wildcats, equaling her record at 2-2 in extended matches. The product of Heelsum, Netherlands, owns a 7-9 career mark and has won three of her last four outings dating back to April 15.

Earlier in the day, Wischhoff teamed with freshman Ivana Kubickova to win a pair of doubles matches and reach the semifinals of Draw A. Wischhoff and Kubickova opened their day together with a clean 8-1 win over Amelie Amsallem and Dimitra Stavrianakou of UMKC. In the quarterfinals, the duo tallied an 8-4 win over the Wichita State pair of Carla Venticinque and Pedrazzi.

K-State secured straight set wins in the other six singles matches to send the entire active roster into the semifinals of their respective draws on Saturday. Junior and No. 14-ranked Petra Niedermayerova tallied a 6-1, 6-3 win over Julia Mongin of Abilene Christian. The win was Niedermayerova’s eighth in her last 10 matches.

The native of Brno, Czech Republic, is now 49-23 (.681) in her career, including a 41-12 (.774) record in straight set matches. Niedermayerova, a 2012 ITA All-American, needs one more win to join teammate Karla Bonacic on the K-State roster with 50 or more career wins.

The No. 69-ranked Bonacic won her sixth straight match dating back to April 1 with a 6-0, 6-3 downing of Janie Nowland of Arkansas State. The senior from Split, Croatia, boosted her career record to 56-33 (.629), which includes a career mark of 39-28 in straight set matches. With seven more singles wins, Bonacic will move into a tie for sixth on the K-State career singles wins list.

K-State seniors Ana Gomez Aleman and Carmen Borau Ramos also tallied straight set wins in impressive fashion. Gomez Aleman halted a personal five-match skid with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Eva Dalvai of UMKC in Draw C. Borau Ramos won for the fourth time in her last five matches with a 6-3, 6-1 decision over Emily Conrad of Abilene Christian in Draw G.

In addition to her two doubles wins with Wischhoff, Kubickova registered her first singles win for K-State. The rookie from Brno, Czech Republic, zipped past Nina Barudzic of South Dakota, 6-0, 6-0.

Also carding a clean sweep was sophomore Amina St. Hill. The second-year player from Gothenburg, Sweden, tallied a 6-0, 6-0 win over Chiara Stefanov of Arkansas State in Draw F. St. Hill is now 8-12 in her brief K-State career, but has won two straight decisions.

Action will resume on Saturday morning at the KU Invitational with the conclusion of doubles play and one singles match for all seven of K-State’s players in the semifinals.
