K-State Victorious on 1st Day of Riviera/ITA Main Draw

Petra Niedermayerova advanced to the round of 16 of the singles main draw on Thursday.

PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. - Kansas State women's tennis booked a strong outing on the first day of main draw action at the Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships on Thursday. K-State players Petra Niedermayerova and Karla Bonacic extended their stay at the Riviera Tennis Club by registering wins for the Wildcats in doubles and singles play and advanced to the round of 16 in both draws.

In singles action, no. 14-ranked Niedermayerova opened her attempt for a second straight semifinals appearance in singles with a hard-fought straight set win over Whitney Kay of North Carolina, 7-6 (8), 6-4, to begin the afternoon session.

The junior from Brno, Czech Republic has now won four straight singles matches to begin the fall season and improves her career singles record to 52-23 (.693) including a 14-13 mark against opponents ranked in the ITA national singles rankings. Niedermayerova's career mark in straight set matches now stands at 44-12 (.786). Niedermayerova will face no. 22-ranked Anett Schutting of California on Friday afternoon in the round of 16.

Niedermayerova's day started in the morning, as she paired with her doubles partner, senior Karla Bonacic to tally a win in the first round of the main draw. After notching three straight wins in qualifying just to reach the main draw, the no. 28-ranked K-State doubles tandem tallied an 8-4 win over no. 31-ranked Tiffany Welcher and Alyssa Hibberd of Memphis.

In the round of 16 match in the afternoon, Bonacic and Niedermayerova pushed the no. 4-ranked tandem Robin Anderson and Skylar Morton of UCLA to the brink, but couldn't overtake the Bruin duo falling 9-7. Bonacic and Niedermayerova strung together four straight doubles victories during the week and are 6-3 this fall. With Thursday's morning win, the tandem recorded their 20th victory together (20-18). Bonacic owns a career doubles record of 45-50, while Niedermayerova is 39-32.

Players that advance to the quarterfinals in singles and doubles play of the main draw at the Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships will qualify for the 2012 USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships in Flushing, N.Y., Nov. 8-11.
