Wildcats Struggle in Doubles Play at ITA Regional

Oct. 18, 2013

K-State AthleticsMANHATTAN, Kan. – The K-State Women’s Tennis team was unable to collect a victory from its three doubles pairings in Doubles Main Draw competition today. With thunderstorms pushing back singles play, doubles competition was held on the six available indoor courts at the Gregg Wadley Indoor Tennis Pavilion.

Head coach Steve Bietau employed two new doubles pairings in No. 6 seeded Petra Niedermayerova / Palma Juhasz and Amina St. Hill / Livia Cirnu while Iva Bago / Maria Panaite competed together for only the second time this year.

Niedermayerova, hoping to replicate her success from last year’s regional with another freshman partner in Juhasz, fell 8-7 in a close match up with the Oklahoma’s Whitney Wofford/Abbi Melrose despite having a first round bye. In last year’s regional, the senior paired with Ivana Kubickova advanced all the way to the event’s final before falling to Samantha Vickers/Isaura Enrique of Tulsa. For the season, Niedermayerova and Juhasz fell to 2-2 and 3-1 in doubles play, respectively.

The duo of St. Hill/Cirnu lost 8-5 to Wichita State’s Abby Stevens/Julia Schiller, while Bago/Panaite fell to Sooners duo Morgan Chumney/Emma Devine, 8-0. In doubles play on the season, St. Hill goes to 4-2, Cirnu to 1-7, Panaite to 2-4 and Bago to 3-4.

With weather expected to clear up tomorrow in Norman, Okla., the Wildcats will look to start the weekend strong in singles play. Niedermayerova, Panaite, St. Hill, Juhasz and Riley Nizzi are all scheduled to compete in Saturday action. For more information go to www.k-statesports.com.
