Niedermayerova Falls in ITA Regional Quarterfinals

Oct. 20, 2013

K-State AthleticsMANHATTAN, Kan. – The Wildcats’ stay at the ITA Central Regional in Norman, Okla., came to an end today as top-seeded Petra Niedermayerova fell in the quarterfinals to Tulsa’s Yelena Nemchen. For Niedermayerova, it is only her second career loss in Central Regional singles play.

The senior Wildcat’s day got off to a strong start as she defeated seeded-opponent Maria Jose Cardona of Kansas in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2. The Round of 16 victory was her 10th-straight in the event with nine of the ten ending in straight sets.

Niedermayerova next squared off against No.7-seeded Nemchen in the quarterfinals. Dropping her first set, 7-5, Niedermayerova rebounded winning the second set, 6-3. Nemchen hung tough though as the Kazakhstan native pulled out the victory, 7-5, in the third and final set. For both competitors, the match was their first three-set match of the competition. Niedermayerova was the lone top-three seeded player to make the quarterfinals.

The defeat drops Niedermayerova’s season singles record to 5-2 and marks the first time she has lost a three-set match since April 5, 2013, against TCU’s Stefanie Tan – a stretch of 16 matches. In fact, her last defeat at Central Regional play came as a freshman when she dropped a three-set match in first round action against another Hurricane in Alex Kichovtkin.

In other competition, freshman Palma Juhasz won her consolation match against Nebraska’s Lauren Wagner, 6-1, 6-0. The victory was Juhasz’s fourth on the season.

With regional play coming to a close for K-State, the Wildcats will next compete at the ITA National Indoor Collegiate Championships in Flushing, N.Y. The competition lasts four days, running from Nov.7 to Nov. 10. For more information please visit
