K-State Charges into Finals at ITA Regional
Oct. 21, 2012
TULSA, Okla. – K-State women’s tennis will be well represented in Monday’s main draw finals at the ITA Central Regional, as junior Petra Niedermayerova and freshman Ivana Kubickova continued their strong play together and as individuals on Sunday.
The pair advanced to the finals in the main draw doubles bracket, while Niedermayerova will compete in the main draw finals in singles at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center. Kubickova rolled through the back draw to secure the consolation title on Sunday.
The duo rolled into the main draw doubles final with an 8-1 win over Melanie Delsart and Anastacia Simons of Southern Illinois. The duo is now 5-0 this fall. Niedermayerova improved her career doubles record to 44-33 (.571), while Kubickova is 9-4 in her young K-State career. Before this weekend’s event, the countrywomen, who each hail from Brno, Czech Republic, had yet to be paired together by head coach Steve Bietau.
“There is definitely a good chemistry with those two on the court right now,” said Bietau about his doubles pair. “They played lights out this morning. They played well throughout the tournament and this morning was a very strong performance.”
The duo of Niedermayerova and Kubickova will look to close out their run in the main draw doubles final on Monday against Samantha Vickers and Isaura Enrique of Tulsa at 9 a.m.
Niedermayerova, the top singles seed in the Central Region and the No. 14 player in the ITA national singles rankings, tallied a pair of straight set wins on Sunday. In her quarterfinal match, Niedermayerova carded a 6-1, 6-2 win over Meghan Blevins of Oklahoma State. In her semifinal match, she dispatched of Hermon Brhane of Oklahoma, 6-0, 6-2. After an hour break following her doubles final with Kubickova, Niedermayerova will face Vickers of Tulsa in the singles final.
Niedermayerova, a 2012 ITA All-American and a two-time All-Big 12 selection, owns a 10-1 mark this fall and improved her career singles record to 58-24 (.707). Niedermayerova’s career mark in straight set matches stands at 50-13 (.794). Niedermayerova’s career winning percentage of .707 ranks second in school history. Bietau has been pleased with what has seen from Niedermayerova this fall.
“She has played awfully well and both of her matches today were indoors. She adjusted to the change in conditions from an outdoor match to an indoor match. She turned up her game a notch after moving inside. She is playing awfully well right now.”
Coupled with her quarterfinal effort at the Riviera/ITA event this season and her final appearance on Monday, Niedermayerova now has an opportunity of receiving an at-large bid into the 2012 USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships in Flushing, N.Y., Nov. 8-11. If she is able to reach the event, it would be her second straight appearance at the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships.
Despite falling in her opening match in the main draw of singles on Friday, Kubickova battled through the back draw to capture the consolation title. Late Saturday evening, Kubickova registered a 6-2, 6-1 win over Simona Caccluttolo of Iowa State in the third round. In the semifinal, Kubickova notched a hard-fought 2-6, 6-1, 1-0 (1) decision over Izabella Zglerska of Nebraska.
Following her doubles win with Niedermayerova on Sunday morning, Kubickova regrouped and turned in a 6-3, 6-2 win over Shelby Talcott of Iowa. Kubickova is 7-3 in her first season with the Wildcats. Bietau has liked his freshman’s maturation this fall.
“Her play has been much better over the last couple weeks in practice. We have seen progress from her and the more settled in she becomes the better she will play.”
