FLUSHING, N.Y. – Kansas State’s Petra Niedermayerova captured the first set on Thursday at the 2011 USTA/ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, but she was edged out in a three-set marathon, 4-6, 7-6, 7-6.

“Very tough match to win today and an even tougher match to lose,” said head coach Steve Bietau of Niedermayerova’s match. “She had some opportunities, but was unable to capitalize on them. She put together a fantastic effort.”

Niedermayerova, ranked No. 35 in the Campbell/ITA national singles rankings, trailed 3-2 in the opening set against No. 22 Kristi Boxx of Mississippi but closed with a 4-1 rally to secure the first set. Niedermayerova took control early in the second set, but Boxx was able to rebound and secure the second set win in a tie-break.

In the third set, Boxx quickly took leads of 3-0 and 4-1 but Niedermayerova didn’t fold and recovered to take a 6-5 lead. Boxx fought back with a rally of her own and outlasted Niedermayerova in the decisive set, 7-6.

“It was a disappointment that she was unable to close out the second set and it took awhile for her to bounce back from that,” said Bietau about the third set. “She got to a point where she needed to take risks and was reward for taking them. To her credit, she was able to get back into the match. Boxx is very difficult to put away. It was a very good effort, but a really tough loss.”

Niedermayerova, a sophomore from Brno, Czech Republic, has posted a 5-5 record this fall and is now 29-15 (.659) in her K-State singles career including a 5-6 mark in three-set matches. She is now 10-7 in her career against ranked opponents and has faced seven straight ranked foes this season.

The reigning Big 12 Player of the Year is K-State’s first representative at this prestigious event since Karina Kuregian in 1995.

Niedermayerova will now compete in the consolation bracket of the 2011 USTA/ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships. Action at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center will resume on Friday morning.
