Karla Bonacic extended her win streak to four matches in early action at the ASU Thunderbird Invitational

FLUSHING, N.Y. - Following a heartbreaking three-set loss in the first round of the 2011 USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships on Thursday, Kansas State’s Petra Niedermayerova rebounded on Friday at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center to register the 30th win of her young K-State career.

“She did a good job of putting yesterday’s match behind her,” said head coach Steve Bietau. “She used lessons she learned from yesterday’s match to help her with today’s win.”

Niedermayerova, ranked No. 35 in the Campbell/ITA national singles rankings, controlled both sets against Sabrina Santamaria of Southern Cal en route to a 6-4, 6-1 win. Bietau knew the result would be different on Friday, than it was in Thursday’s first round.

“I looked at her in the second set, when she was up 4-1, and could tell that losing was not an option for her today.”

The sophomore from Brno, Czech Republic, was able to piece things together early and mentally put her three-set loss to Mississippi’s Kristi Boxx behind her.

“I was focused on today and tried to forget about yesterday. Hopefully yesterday’s result will be a positive influence on me in the future, but I just focused in on the match today.”

Niedermayerova has posted a 6-5 record this fall and is now 30-15 (.667) in her K-State singles career including a 25-9 (.735) mark in straight set matches. This was the first time in eight matches that Niedermayerova faced an unranked opponent.

The reigning Big 12 Player of the Year is K-State’s first representative at this prestigious event since Karina Kuregian in 1995.

Niedermayerova will now continue action in the consolation bracket of the 2011 USTA/ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships on Saturday. She will face No. 24 Cristina Sanchez-Quintanar of Texas A&M at 10 a.m. (CT).

Across the country at the first day of the ASU Thunderbird Invitational at the Whiteman Tennis Center, K-State’s Karla Bonacic continued her strong play from two weeks ago at the Kansas Invitational. Bonacic extended her winning streak to four with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Michelle Sulahian of Michigan in the first round of the main draw. She improved her career mark to 26-24 in straight set matches.

In her afternoon match in the round of 16 against Fresno State’s Marianna Jodoin, Bonacic’s comeback effort was thwarted as Jodoin held on for the 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 win. Bonacic, a junior from Split, Croatia, is now 5-3 this fall and is 38-27 in her career.

Bonacic will continue action at the ASU Thunderbird Invitational on Saturday. Her opponent is yet to be determined.
