K-State Appears in First ITA Spring Rankings

MANHATTAN, Kan. – In the debut of the spring 2014 Campbell/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) national team rankings, Kansas State checked in at No. 55 on Friday. The Wildcats are also represented in the national rankings by senior Petra Niedermayerova.

K-State makes its 42nd appearance in the last 47 Campbell/ITA national team rankings dating back to Feb. 8, 2011. This is the third straight season K-State will open the spring schedule among the national team rankings after debuting at No. 46 in 2012. The Wildcats ended the spring 2013 season ranked No. 54 and registered a 10-11 overall record.
Niedermayerova will open her final spring season ranked No. 42 in the national ITA singles rankings and is No. 3 in ITA Central Region rankings. She has now appeared in 31 consecutive national ITA singles rankings with a career-best of No. 11 in the March 26, 2013 rankings. She registered a 9-4 record in the fall, which included a pair of top-10 wins over No. 8 Krista Hardebeck of Stanford and No. 5 Annet Schutting of California.

Niedermayerova, the first two-time ITA All-American in school history, enters her final campaign with the Wildcats as the career singles wins leader with a record of 89-37 (.706). Her career singles winning percentage of .706 ranks second in program history.

Niedermayerova concluded her 2012-13 season with a school record mark of 32-10 (.762). She ended the season with wins in six of her final eight matches and possessed a 12-8 record against ITA ranked singles opponents. She earned her second straight ITA All-American honor, her second career ITA Central Region Player to Watch award and garnered her third straight unanimous All-Big 12 singles selection.

She was also successful in the classroom in 2012-13, as she earned her first Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-America At-Large First Team citation, her second straight Academic All-Big 12 First Team honor and the Big 12 Conference’s inaugural Scholar-Athlete of the Year for women’s tennis.

Head coach Steve Bietau returns for his 30th season with the Wildcats and owns 265 career victories. In addition to Niedermayerova’s final season, Bietau return another letterwinner for the 2013-14 season in junior Amina St. Hill. The pair will lead a talented sextet of freshmen brought in by K-State head coach Steve Bietau. The six newcomers for the 2013-14 season are: Iva Bago, Liv Cirnu, Palma Juhasz, Tegan Louw, Riley Nizzi and Maria Panaite.

K-State will open its 2014 spring schedule on Jan. 24-25 in Athens, Ga., at the ITA Season Kick-off. The Wildcats will face Arkansas at 9 a.m., on Friday and will face either Georgia or Elon on Saturday. K-State will open its home schedule on Friday, Jan. 31 against Northern Iowa.
