MANHATTAN, Kan. –  Following a 2011 spring season that saw a school record for wins and a return to the national rankings, Kansas State women’s tennis will open the 2012 spring season in the Campbell/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) national team rankings announced on Tuesday afternoon.

K-State will enter the season ranked No. 46 in the nation and will make their 15th consecutive appearance in the rankings dating back to Feb. 8, 2011. This is the first time K-State will open a season in the national team rankings since the 2007 spring season.

In addition to the team ranking, a pair of Kansas State women’s tennis student-athletes were rewarded for their strong fall performances in the Campbell/ITA national and regional singles rankings. Sophomore Petra Niedermayerova tallied a No. 17 national ranking and a No. 1 mark in the Central Region, while junior Karla Bonacic was slated at No. 94 in the nation and No. 7 in the Central Region. This was the first time K-State has had two players ranked in the Campbell/ITA national singles rankings at the same time since the April 28, 2003 rankings.

Niedermayerova achieved her highest career ranking on Tuesday. Her previous career high in the rankings came at the beginning of the 2011 fall season, as she was ranked No. 35. The reigning ITA Central Region Player to Watch checked in as the top player in the ITA Central Region ranking.

In addition to Niedermayerova’s ITA singles ranking, she was also among the Campbell/ITA doubles rankings for the first time with freshman Marketa Trousilova. The duo achieved a No. 28 national ranking following a 3-1 record this fall. Within the ITA Central Region rankings, Niedermayerova and Trousilova are ranked No. 2 behind the pair of Marie-Pier Huet and Whitney Ritchie of Oklahoma.

A product of Brno, Czech Republic, Niedermayerova finished the 2011 fall season with a 6-6 record and is now 30-16 (.652) in her brief career with the Wildcats. A season ago, Niedermayerova recorded a 5-5 record in the fall on her way to a 24-10 overall mark in her freshman campaign.

Niedermayerova, the reigning Big 12 Player of the Year, was K-State’s first representative at the 2011 USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships since Karina Kuregian in 1995. Niedermayerova earned her way into the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships by advancing to the semifinals of the ITA/Riviera Women’s All-American Championships in October. While in Los Angeles for the Riviera Championships, Niedermayerova defeated three foes ranked among the top-30 in the country including No. 5 Lauren Embree of Florida.

Bonacic registered her first career ranking with Tuesday’s announcement. The native of Split, Croatia, completed the 2011 fall season with a 6-4 record and is now 39-27 in her career which includes a 27-25 mark in straight set matches.

The six wins by Bonacic in the 2011 fall season set a new career-best in the fall campaign. In her previous two seasons, she registered a total of five wins in the fall season.

Head coach Steve Bietau returns for his 28th season with the Wildcats and needs just three victories to reach 250 for his career. Bietau’s roster will include six letterwinners from the 2011 squad that set the school record for wins in a season with a mark of 16-7 including a 6-5 mark in Big 12 action. The Wildcats finished the 2011 season ranked No. 46 in the nation.

Kansas State will open its spring schedule on Jan. 13-14 at the Bulldog Invitational in Athens, Ga. K-State will face No. 7 Georgia on Friday at 3 p.m. (CT), followed by a neutral site match against Troy at 2 p.m. (CT), on Saturday.
