K-State Debuts in First ITA Spring Rankings

MANHATTAN, Kan. – In the debut of the spring 2015 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) national team rankings on Tuesday, Kansas State checked in at No. 64. The Wildcats are also represented in the Central Region singles and doubles rankings by sophomores Sara Castellano and Palma Juhasz.


K-State makes its 54th appearance in the last 61 ITA national team rankings dating back to Feb. 8, 2011. This is the fourth straight season K-State will open the spring schedule among the national team rankings. The Wildcats ended the spring 2014 season ranked No. 68 in the nation and No. 6 in the Central Region team rankings and registered a 10-13 overall record.

In her first season with the Wildcats, Castellano garnered a No. 5 ranking in the ITA Central Region singles rankings. Castellano, a product of Carmagnola, Italy, registered a record of 7-5 in the 2014 fall season including a semifinal appearance at the ITA Central Regional and a win over No. 73 Katherine Ip of Rice in her fall finale.

In the ITA Central Region doubles rankings, Castellano and Juhasz check in at No. 9 in the region. The duo combined for a 4-4 record in the fall.
 
Head coach Danielle Steinberg enters her first season with the Wildcats. Steinberg, the seventh head coach in the history of the program, begins the spring with a roster featuring six Wildcats with winning singles records following the 2014 fall season. Iva Bago, Castellano and Juhasz each tallied seven wins, while Livia Cirnu, Laura Hopton and Amina St. Hill each pocketed six wins.

K-State will open its 39th season of action on Jan. 17 in Manhattan, as the Wildcats host Northern Iowa at 10 a.m. The match will be played indoors at the Body First Tennis and Fitness Center.
