MANHATTAN, Kan. – Kansas State, after recording one of the best seasons in school history, will begin a challenging spring schedule this weekend as the Wildcats will travel to Athens, Ga., for the Bulldog Invitational on Jan. 14-15. K-State, ranked No. 46 in the Campbell/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) national team rankings announced on Jan. 3, will face No. 7 Georgia on Friday, Jan. 13 at 3 p.m. (CT), followed by a neutral site match against Troy on Saturday, Jan. 14, at 2 p.m.

Head coach Steve Bietau, the second-longest tenured head coach in Kansas State athletics history (Ward Haylett, track, 34 years), returns for his 28th season with the Wildcats and needs just three victories to reach 250 for his career (247-324, .433). Bietau’s roster will include six letterwinners from the 2011 squad that set the school record for wins in a season with a mark of 16-7 including a 6-5 mark in Big 12 action. The Wildcats finished the 2011 season ranked No. 46 in the nation.

K-State’s 2012 spring schedule includes 10 teams who reached the 2011 NCAA Tournament and 15 teams ranked among the Campbell/ITA top-75 announced on Jan. 3. The Wildcats will face eight straight opponents ranked among the Campbell/ITA top-75 from Feb. 29 to April 1.

Among the returning letterwinners for Bietau are sophomore Petra Niedermayerova and juniors Karla Bonacic and Ana Gomez Aleman. Niedermayerova achieved the highest individual ranking in school history, as she will enter the spring season ranked No. 17 in the nation. The product of Brno, Czech Republic, is 30-16 in her brief K-State career and will look to return to the NCAA Singles Championships where she was the fourth Wildcat to play in the event and the first since 2002.

Bonacic garnered her first career ranking, No. 94, and will look to improve on her career-best start of 6-4 this fall. The native of Split, Croatia, owns a 39-28 career record and will look to join Niedermayerova at the NCAA Singles Championships.

Gomez Aleman pieced together a career-year in 2011, as she tallied an overall record of 20-13. The product of Murcia, Spain, achieved a career-best nine-match winning streak and helped the Wildcats upset Texas A&M last season with a match-clinching straight set victory. She also paced the team in doubles play with 19 wins.

Following K-State’s weekend in Athens, Ga., the Wildcats will take part in the ITA Kickoff Weekend. Kansas State will travel to Clemson, S.C., to face No. 62 Wake Forest on Jan. 28 at 9 a.m. (CT). K-State will face either No. 14 Clemson or No. 61 Purdue on Sunday, Jan. 29.
