K-State Kicks off 2009 at Georgia Invite

MANHATTAN, Kan. Kansas State women’s tennis will play its final tune-up this weekend at the Georgia Invitational in Athens, Ga., before dual play begins at the end of January.


The Wildcats will face No. 6 Georgia, Troy and NAIA-member Auburn-Montgomery. Each day teams will play singles and doubles matches with the efforts counting towards just the players’ individual records.


During the fall campaign Kansas State was led by sophomore Antea Huljev and a pair of freshmen, Petra Chuda and Masha Slupska. Huljev enters action this weekend by winning five of her last seven matches during the fall. The product of Velenje, Slovenia, tallied an 8-4 mark overall, including a 4-1 record in three-set matches. She is the only Wildcat veteran to own a winning singles career record at 23-21.


Chuda debuted with a 7-5 record, including a 6-3 mark in two-set matches. The native of Sokolnice, Czech Republic, will bring a four-match winning streak to Athens. Slupska is 6-4 after her inaugural fall season with the Wildcats. The rookie from Kiev, Ukraine, has won four of her last five singles matches.


K-State’s top doubles team from the fall was junior Natasha Vieira and Chuda with a 5-2 record. The duo was recognized by the ITA with a spring preseason ranking of No. 15 in the Central Region. The pair has won four of its last five matches.


Kansas State’s dual play schedule begins January 31 against Drake at 11 a.m. The Wildcats will play all of its indoor matches this spring at the Cottonwood Racquet Club in Manhattan. During the spring, the Wildcats will face 11 teams that are ranked among the top-75 in the preseason ITA Rankings, including four teams ranked amongst the top-35.
