K-State Ready for Spring After Georgia Invite

MANHATTAN, Kan. Kansas State women’s tennis knocked off the rust from the winter during last weekend’s Georgia Invitational. The Wildcats came away with three singles wins and a doubles win during the three days of action.

Freshmen Mariya Slupska and Nina Sertic each captured singles wins on Sunday. Slupska ended a three-match slide by defeating Annabelle Bares of Troy in three sets, 5-7, 6-1, 6-2. Slupska enters dual match play with a 7-6 career record, including a 3-0 mark in three-set matches.

Sertic, a January addition to the roster, registered her first career win at Kansas State with a three-set decision over Mirte De Bakker of Troy, 1-6, 7-6 (5), 6-1.

Picking up the third singles win was junior Natasha Vieira. The product of Carabobo, Venezuela defeated Vika Lukinova of Troy in straight sets, 6-2, 7-5.

Vieira was also a member of the victorious doubles team this weekend, as she teamed with freshman Petra Chuda. The duo defeated Whitney Byrd and Julia Verdy of Auburn-Montgomery, 8-3. The tandem now holds a 6-4 record together.

K-State will open the 2009 season at home against Drake on Jan. 31. The Wildcats will host the Bulldogs at Cottonwood Racquet Club at 11 a.m.
