K-State Take Win Streak to Texas This Weekend

MANHATTAN, Kan. –
For the first time since the 2008 season, Kansas State is ranked in the Campbell/ITA women’s tennis national rankings. The Wildcats are ranked No. 52 in this week’s poll, which is the highest for the program since March 7, 2006, when K-State was No. 45.

The Wildcats are off to a 4-0 start for the sixth time in the program’s 36-year history and the third time in the last nine seasons. K-State achieved this feat with a pair of 6-1 victories last weekend, defeating Miami (OH) and previosuly-ranked No. 30 Iowa. The win over the Hawkeyes was the highest ranked opponent K-State has defeated in at least nine seasons.

K-State has been bolstered by the play of the top half of its singles’ lineup, as the trio of Petra Niedermayerova, Antea Huljev and Karla Bonacic is 12-0 this season with 10 of those victories coming in straight sets.

The Wildcats are joined in the rankings by seven other Big 12 squads, led by Baylor at No. 3. Also in the rankings from the league are Texas (22), Oklahoma (24), Nebraska (32), Texas A&M (33), Oklahoma State (59) and Texas Tech (69).

Kansas State will conclude its season-high four-match road trip this weekend, as the Wildcats visit Denton, Texas, on Feb. 12-13. K-State will face Louisiana-Lafayette on Saturday at 12 p.m., and No. 62 North Texas on Sunday at 10 a.m. Both matches will be contested at the Waranch Tennis Complex.
