K-State Takes Unbeaten Mark to Tulsa

MANHATTAN, Kan. Kansas State women’s tennis will take its 3-0 start on the road this weekend for two matches in Tulsa, Okla. The Wildcats will face Sam Houston State on Saturday at 1p.m., followed by No. 42 Tulsa on Sunday at 11 a.m. Both matches will take place at the Case Tennis Center on the University of Tulsa campus.

 

The Wildcats are coming off a 5-2 upset win over No. 34 Wichita State on Tuesday night. K-State has been led this season by number one singles player, senior Viviana Yrureta. The product of Puerto Ordaz, Venezuela, owns an overall singles mark of 9-6 and is 3-0 in dual singles play. She owns a career mark of 9-15 in the top spot in the lineup.

 

Also making her mark is freshman Vanessa Cottin. The January addition from Ouiainville, France is also 3-0 in dual singles play at the number two spot in the K-State lineup.

 

The Wildcats have been able to take control of matches early, winning the doubles point in the first three matches this season. Over the last three seasons, K-State is 22-6 (.786) when winning the doubles point.

 

Sam Houston State is 1-5 this season, with the lone win coming against Montana on Jan. 27. The Bearkats are led by junior Irina Sotnikova at the number one position. Sotnikova has also teamed with junior Peta Taylor for a 6-0 doubles mark at the number one spot. K-State and Sam Houston State have played just once in the series history, with the Bearkats winning the March 15, 1983 meeting, 7-2.

 

Tulsa is 7-1 on the season, defeating Kansas, 4-3, in its last match on Feb. 3. The Golden Hurricane are led by freshman Alexandra Kichoutkin at the number one singles position. The native of New York, N.Y., is 8-0 in dual singles matches in her rookie season. K-State holds the edge in the overall series, 7-4, but the teams have split the last four meetings.


Following the weekend’s matches, the Wildcats will travel to the state of Utah to take on Utah on Feb.22 and No. 58 BYU on Feb. 23.
