Wildcats Rumble Past Utes

MANHATTAN, Kan. Kansas State swept doubles play and earned wins in three of the first four singles matches to clinch its seventh-consecutive win over the Utah Utes, 5-2, at Ahearn Field House on Friday.

K-State (2-1, 0-0 Big 12) opened the Friday’s competition with two quick wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles, before Katerina Kudlackova and Olga Klimova rallied from an early 2-0 deficit to top Utah’s Elizabeth Ferris and Leigh Walsh, 8-5, and earned the Wildcats a doubles point sweep.

Kansas State’s Tamar Kvaratskhelia, who teamed with Maria Perevochikova in an 8-1 win at No. 3 doubles, withdrew from competition due to an injury and defaulted her match with Utah’s Emily Kwok.

Perevoshchikova won her fourth straight singles match and broke the 1-1 tie with a straight-set victory over Leigh Walsh at No. 3. Perevoshchikova improved her record to 3-0 in dual play and won her fourth match of the year after missing the entire fall schedule.

Kudlackova outlasted Cheyenne Reveche 7-5 in the first set of their match at No. 4, and coasted through the second set 6-3. K-State’s Fernanda Da Valle sealed the victory for the Wildcats with her straight-set win over Andrea Maughan at No. 5.

Kansas State’s Viviana Yrureta spent the afternoon locked in a marathon match with Utah’s Elizabeth Ferris, the No. 67 player in the nation according to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s first poll of the season. Yrureta dropped the first set 4-6, but rallied in the second to force a decisive third. Ferris won the third in a tie-break to take the more than three-hour match for Utah.

Klimova closed the match out for the Wildcats, winning in straight sets over Cinthia Saucedo at No. 6.

K-State improved to 2-0 when winning the doubles point this season and remains undefeated in Ahearn Field House after two matches. Kansas State improved to 10-6 all-time against the Utes (4-3, 0-0 Mountain West), including a 6-1 mark in Manhattan.
