K-State Hosts Wichita State Saturday

MANHATTAN, Kan. - Kansas State women's tennis returns home this weekend to face Wichita State for the 15th straight season on Saturday afternoon at the Cottonwood Racquet Club. Admission is free to the public.

K-State (3-2, 0-0 Big 12) is coming off a weekend which saw the Wildcats split a pair of matches in Albuquerque, N.M. The Wildcats were edged out by Nevada on Saturday afternoon, 4-3, but rebounded to shut out New Mexico on Sunday, 7-0.

During the weekend, freshman Maryna Chumak extended her career-best winning streak to five by winning both of her singles matches including a match-clinching three-set win over Elaine Bourdages of New Mexico on Sunday, Feb. 21. With the two victories, the product of Odessa, Ukraine, evened her record at 8-8 and moved her spring mark to 4-0.

Chumak has seen action at both number five and six in the K-State lineup this season. The back half of K-State's singles lineup, positions four through six, are a combined 10-5 through the first five matches this season.

At the top of K-State's singles lineup, junior Antea Huljev won consecutive matches for the first time since Oct. 22 at the Wilson/ITA Regional. The native of Velenje, Slovenia, has won three of her last four singles matches and became the first Wildcat this season to reach double figures in singles wins with her 10-11 mark.

For the first time this spring, freshman Karla Bonacic and sophomore Petra Chuda were paired together in doubles action over the weekend. The duo was slotted into the number two position in the lineup by head coach Steve Bietau and registered two wins and helped the Wildcats secure both doubles points. This season the Bonacic and Chuda pair is 4-1.

The Wildcats hold a 20-18 lead in the series with Wichita State. The Shockers won last season's matchup in Wichita, 6-1, on Feb. 21. The teams have split the last four meetings in the series.

This will be K-State's third match against a Missouri Valley Conference opponent this season, as K-State defeated Drake and Northern Iowa to open the spring campaign. The Wildcats are 51-25 (.671) against schools from the Missouri Valley.

Following Saturday's home match, Kansas State will begin a five match road trip highlighted by the start of the Big 12 schedule. The Wildcats begin the trip with a pair of matches in Tulsa, Okla. K-State will face North Texas on Saturday, March 6 at 12 p.m., and will finish the weekend against Tulsa on Sunday, March 7 at 10 a.m. K-State will open Big 12 action on March 19 at Texas, followed by a trip to Texas A&M on March 21.
