Wildcats Host Jayhawks to Open Big 12 Action

MANHATTAN, Kan. The No. 70 Kansas State women’s tennis team returns to action on Wednesday as the Wildcats host Kansas in the Big 12 opener. The match is set for a 2 p.m. start with doubles play, followed by singles matches. The site of the match, indoors at Ahearn Field House or outdoors at the Washburn Tennis Facility, will be determined on Wednesday based on the afternoon’s weather.

 

K-State (4-3, 0-0 Big 12) has won three straight in the series with the Jayhawks, but Kansas holds a 37-8 lead in the series. In Big 12 openers, the Wildcats are 7-4 overall and have won two of the last three openers.

 

The Wildcats have been paced by the number four position in the singles lineup, as freshman Antea Huljev and Natasha Vieira have combined for a 5-2 record. Huljev has won three straight at the number four spot in the lineup, including a three-set win over Chie Hayaska of BYU on Feb. 23.

 

Vieira is 2-1 this season and is 3-3 for her career at the number four position in the lineup. The product of Carabobo, Venezuela, is 1-3 at two other positions in the lineup this season.

 

Kansas (3-5, 0-0) has been led by junior Edina Horvath with a 5-1 record at the number two position in the lineup. Overall, Horvath has tallied a 12-6 mark this season.

 

Kansas State will continue a two-match homestand with a non-conference match this weekend, as the Wildcats host No. 64 New Mexico on Saturday at 11 a.m. Site will be determined based on the weather.
