K-State Hosts Two Matches This Weekend

MANHATTAN, Kan. Kansas State women’s tennis returns home for the first time in a month to face a pair of ranked foes on Thursday and Sunday. K-State will take on No. 40 BYU on Thursday at 11 a.m. The Wildcats will return to action on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. to face No. 32 Tulsa.


With the forecasted high temperature in the Manhattan-area to be in the mid-70s on Thursday, K-State will play its first home outdoor match of the season. K-State will play its outdoor matches this season at the Wamego Recreation Complex. Sunday’s match location is to be determined between Cottonwood Racquet Club in Manhattan or Wamego Recreation Complex.


K-State (3-2) will look to end a four-match losing streak to BYU on Thursday. The Cougars (4-5) have the upper-hand in the series at 16-2, with K-State last winning on Jan. 25, 2003 (4-3 in Manhattan). The Wildcats are 1-0 against a Mountain West opponent this season, defeating Colorado State, 5-2, on Feb. 8, in Boise, Idaho.


Against Tulsa (13-2) on Sunday, K-State will look to end a two-match skid against the Golden Hurricane with its last win coming on Feb. 23, 2006 (4-3 in Tulsa, Okla.). The Wildcats lead the overall series between the schools, 7-5. All-time, K-State is 10-10 against teams from Conference USA.


The Wildcats have a winning singles record at four of the six positions this season, with the four spots all holding a 3-2 mark. Sophomore Antea Huljev has held down the number one position in the lineup this spring with a 3-2 mark and is the first player to reach double figures in wins this season with an 11-9 overall record.


K-State’s doubles teams were adjusted following the match with Wichita State on Feb. 21 and capitalized against Arkansas-Little Rock on Feb. 22 by securing the doubles point in that match.


The new tandems of Huljev and sophomore Vanessa Cottin and senior Katerina Kudlackova and junior Natasha Vieira were paired together for the match with UALR. The duo of Huljev and Cottin is now 5-6, as they played together during their freshman campaigns. Kudlackova and Vieira are now 6-3 together, recording a 5-3 mark in 2007-08.  


Following this week’s matches, Kansas State will open Big 12 action at Iowa State on Friday, March 13.
