K-State Falls to Iowa State in Nail-Biter

AMES, Iowa Kansas State captured the doubles point and held a 3-2 lead on Friday afternoon, but Iowa State won the final two matches to send K-State to its third straight loss.


The Wildcats (3-5, 0-1 Big 12) won the doubles point for the fourth time this season with wins at number one and number three doubles. The number one tandem of senior Katerina Kudlackova and freshman Nina Sertic defeated Erin Karonis and Kara Hickey, 8-5. The combination of Kudlackova and Sertic is now 2-2 this spring.


The number three doubles team of sophomore Antea Huljev and freshman Petra Chuda improved their record together to 3-0 with a 9-8 (7-2) win over Tessa Lang and Liza Wischer.


Iowa State (8-3, 1-1 Big 12) rebounded with wins at number one and two singles to take a 2-1 lead. K-State recovered, as sophomore Vanessa Cottin set down Lang in straight sets at the number three position, 6-4, 6-2. The win was Cottin’s second this spring and brings her record this season to 6-6.


Freshman Mariya Slupska gave the Wildcats the 3-2 advantage in the match, as she garnered her second win in seven spring matches by defeating Marie-Christine Chartier at fourth position, 6-4, 6-4. This was the first match at the number four position in the lineup for the product of Kiev, Ukraine. Slupska’s overall now stands at 9-10.


The Cyclones were able to swing the match back into their favor with a straight sets win at number five singles. Junior Natasha Vieira was K-State’s final hope for the win, but fell to Hickey in three sets, 6-7 (4), 6-2, 7-5.  


Kansas State returns to Manhattan for a pair of Big 12 matches, as the Wildcats welcome in Missouri on March 21 and Colorado on March 22.
