K-State Edges Past Missouri

COLUMBIA, Mo. Kansas State women’s tennis put an end to a five-match losing streak on Friday afternoon with a 5-2 win over Missouri at the Green Tennis Center. This is K-State’s first win at Missouri since the 2003 season.

The Wildcats (5-5, 1-1 Big 12) registered five singles wins for the first time since Feb. 9, 2008 against Saint Louis, to secure its first team win in a month. K-State extended four of the five matches to three-sets and improved K-State’s record to 21-13 this season in matches that reach three-sets.

K-State captured singles wins at the numbers one, three, four, five and six positions in the lineup. Viviana Yrureta won her third straight match at the top of K-State’s lineup with a three-set triumph over Mallory Weber, 6-4, 3-6, 6-2. Yrureta, a senior from Puerto Ordaz, Venezuela, has now won three straight matches for the second time this spring season. In each of her last three wins, Yrureta has extended each of her matches to three sets.

At the number three position, junior Katerina Kudlackova ended a five-match losing streak by defeating Chrissy Svetlic, 6-3, 6-7 (4), 6-2. Kudlackova had won her first four matches to open the spring dual season before falling on hard luck. She is 4-1 this season when playing in the third position in the lineup.

In the number four matchup, freshman Vanessa Cottin also ended a five-match downturn with a 6-3, 6-3 straight set victory over Kaitlin Durham. Cottin is now 4-8 since joining the roster in January.

The final match to wrap up on Friday was at the number five position, as sophomore Natasha Vieira defeated Maureen Modesto in one of the longest matches to be played this season. Vieira outlasted Modesto in a 3-hour, 45-minute marathon with a 6-4, 6-7 (8-6), 7-6 (5) victory. Vieira ended a six-match losing skid with the victory and moved her spring record to 4-6.

In the six position in the K-State lineup, senior Olga Klimova defeated Kaitlyn Ritchie, 6-3, 4-6, 6-2, to earn her fourth win of the spring season.

Kansas State will continue its road trip on Sunday, as the Wildcats travel to Colorado to face the Buffaloes at 11 a.m.
