March 29, 2011

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Kansas State freshman Petra Niedermayerova was selected as the Big 12 Women’s Tennis Player of the Week for March 29 in an announcement by the league office on Tuesday afternoon. The honor is the first for Niedermayerova and the first for a Wildcat since the 2005 season.

Niedermayerova garnered the honor after recording her fourth and fifth wins this season over ranked opponents, defeating No. 15 Aeriel Ellis  (Texas) in three sets 6-3, 1-6, 6-2 and No. 18 Nazari Urbina  (Texas A&M) 6-1, 6-1 last weekend. With the two wins, the freshman totaled three wins over top 20 opponents in an eight-day span. The victory over Urbina on Saturday helped the Wildcats to the program's first win over Texas A&M in the history of the series (17 meetings), as K-State toppled the Aggies 5-2 to improve to 2-0 against teams ranked in the top 25.

The victory over Ellis was the highest ranked opponent Niedermayerova has defeated this season. She is 17-7 overall and 12-2 at the No. 1 singles position. The Brno, Czech Republic native also secured a doubles win with playing partner Nina Sertic in the Texas A&M match and owns a team-leading mark of 15-11 in double play.

K-State’s last Big 12 Player of the Week was Maria Rosenberg on April 18, 2005. Overall, this is the sixth time a K-State student-athlete has earned the league’s weekly honor and Niedermayerova becomes the fourth student-athlete to earn the honor.

No. 31 Kansas State will return to action on Friday, as the Wildcats host No. 41 Nebraska at 1 p.m. Depending on weather conditions, the match between the Wildcats and Huskers will either be played outdoors at the Wamego Recreation Complex in Wamego, Kan., or indoors at the Body First Tennis and Fitness Center in Manhattan. The match location will be determined early Friday morning and will be announced at www.kstatesports.com.
