Wildcats Drop Close 4-3 Match To No. 55 Missouri

MANHATTAN, Kan. One point was the difference as the Kansas State women’s tennis team dropped a close 4-3 Big 12 Conference dual match to 55th-ranked Missouri Wednesday afternoon at the Washburn Tennis Facility.

The Wildcats, coming so close to capturing their first league win of the season, led for most of the match. Kansas State’s Maria Rosenberg and Paulina Castillejos started the winning spurt early as the duo defeated Missouri’s Urska Juric and Katka Sevcikova, 8-5, at No. 1 doubles. Teammates Jessica Simosa and Judith Diaz later followed with an 8-2 victory at the No. 2 spot, to seal the doubles point for the Wildcats.

Missouri (10-8, 3-5), however, battled back in the singles portion of the match winning at the No. 2, No. 3, No. 5 and No. 6 positions for the come-from-behind victory. Rosenberg and Hayley McIver were the lone Wildcats to pick up victories in singles play. Rosenberg won her rematch versus Juric in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1, to improve her spring record to 8-5 at No. 1 singles. Meanwhile, McIver rallied back from a 4-1 first-set deficit to beat MU’s Yelena Olshanskaya, 6-4, 6-3, at the No. 4 spot.

“We knew on paper that Missouri was better than us and knew that if we were going to beat them, we were going to have to get it done,” Assistant Coach Andres Gonzalez said. “We played very well in doubles and the team played with a lot of pride and you could see that they wanted to win the doubles point and they did. Unfortunately, we didn’t get it done in singles. We played very well and were up 3-2, but we were unable to finish it. For a moment there, it looked like we were going to get away with the match.”

K-State (4-9, 0-5) continues its three-match home stretch this weekend hosting No. 15 Oklahoma on Saturday, April 3 at 10 a.m. and Iowa State on Sunday, April 4 at noon. All matches played at the Washburn Tennis Facility, unless weather permits and play is moved indoors to Ahearn Field House.
