K-State Upset Bid Comes Up Short

MANHATTAN, Kan. Kansas State women’s tennis received two singles wins and a doubles victory, but No. 4 Baylor held off the Wildcats on Sunday at the Washburn Tennis Facility, 5-2.

K-State (6-10, 2-5 Big 12) received its singles victories from freshmen Pauline Guemas and Antea Huljev. Guemas was a late addition to the lineup at the number six position, but was able to piece together her second Big 12 win with a 6-4, 6-1 decision over Natalie Holmes. The native of St. Fort, France has won two of her last three matches and is 3-3 this spring in the final position in the K-State lineup.

Huljev extended her match to three sets with 28th-ranked Taylor Ormand. Huljev was the victor after Ormond retired in the third set with a leg injury, 1-6, 6-1, 3-1. Huljev is now 3-3 in Big 12 play and 14-13 in her debut season.

Baylor (20-2, 6-0) had to fight off the Wildcats during doubles action to secure the doubles point, as K-State held a lead early in all three matches. K-State’s number three doubles’ pair of senior Viviana Yrureta and sophomore Natasha Vieira defeated Jana Bielikova and Zuzana Chmelarova, 8-5, to register the Wildcats’ lone doubles win. The duo of Yrureta and Vieira is 2-1 in Big 12 play and 4-7 overall.

Kansas State will travel to Texas next weekend to face Texas A&M and Texas.
