K-State leads the series with West Virginia, 3-0... K-State won the last meeting between the schools, 4-3, in Morgantown on March 14... The Wildcats defeated the Mountaineers, 4-0, in last season’s Big 12 Championships.

MANHATTAN, Kan. – No. 67 Kansas State, who secured the number seven seed for the second straight season, will open the 2014 Big 12 Women’s Tennis Championships on Thursday morning in Fort Worth, Texas, as the Wildcats will face number 10 seed West Virginia at 10 a.m. The winner of Thursday’s match will advance to the quarterfinals to face number two seed and No. 25 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) ranked Oklahoma State on Friday at 3 p.m.

Last weekend, K-State (9-12, 3-6 Big 12) closed out its 2014 spring regular season schedule with a 6-1 win over Sunflower State rival, Kansas, on Saturday, April 19. The win ended a seven-match skid for the Wildcats and marked K-State’s first home win at Mike Goss Tennis Stadium. It was also K-State’s 10th win in the last 13 meetings with the Jayhawks, including a streak of six straight victories.

The Wildcats have been led this season by senior Petra Niedermayerova. The two-time ITA All-American and three-time All-Big 12 singles selection, has carded a 23-9 overall record this season including a 14-5 mark in the spring. Niedermayerova, ranked No. 51 in the national ITA singles rankings, registered a 5-4 record in league action this season, marking her fourth straight season with a winning Big 12 record.

Also contributing in the K-State singles’ lineup this season has been junior Amina St. Hill. The product of Gothenburg, Sweden, has achieved a personal season-best for wins with her 16-13 overall record. She notched a personal high for Big 12 wins with a 5-4 mark this season playing at the number four and five positions in the K-State lineup.

The tandem of Niedermayerova and St. Hill has combined for the top doubles record for the Wildcats this season. The number one pairing is 9-5 this season which includes a 3-4 league record. Against Kansas on April 19, Niedermayerova set the school record for doubles wins in a career with her 74th career victory. She now holds the school records for singles and doubles wins in a career and a season.

K-State in the Big 12 Championships
The Wildcats enter this week’s Big 12 Championships as a number seven seed, and will face West Virginia for the second straight season in the first round of the conference championships.

K-State is 11-17 in the Big 12 Championships and have reached the quarterfinals nine times, including a semifinal appearance during the 2000 season. As a number seven seed, K-State is 3-4 with a previous appearance as the seventh seed coming in 2013.

Cirnu Pacing Large Group of Freshmen
The Wildcats have six freshmen on its roster this season, with five seeing action on the court and contributing to the lineup and final team results on a weekly basis. The five freshmen to see action this season are: Iva Bago, Livia Cirnu, Palma Juhasz, Riley Nizzi and Maria Panaite. Tegan Louw has been unable to take the court due to an injury, but will return next season.

Cirnu has paced the Wildcat freshmen with a 15-17 overall record, including a 3-6 Big 12 mark. The product of Constanta, Romania, recorded consecutive wins to close out the 2014 regular season. Earlier this spring, Cirnu carded a career-best four match win streak.
