K-State Places Two on All-Big 12 Teams

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Kansas State women’s tennis was rewarded on Tuesday with a pair of student-athletes on the All-Big 12 singles and doubles teams in an announcement by the league office. The two players to garner the honors were sophomore Petra Niedermayerova and junior Karla Bonacic.

This is the first time since the 2005 season that head coach Steve Bietau has placed two players on the All-Big 12 singles team. The All-Big 12 doubles honor is the first for a Wildcat duo since the 2004 campaign.

In the 2011-12 season, Niedermayerova owns an overall record of 22-12 (.647) and is 7-11 against ranked opponents. Her 22 wins this season tie her for 10th in school history for wins in a season. Last season, Niedermayerova finished with a 24-10 record to notch the second-highest win total by a freshman in school history.

Ranked No. 29 in the Campbell/ITA national singles rankings as of April 30, Niedermayerova tied for the team lead this spring with a 16-6 record which included a career-high winning streak of nine straight matches from Jan. 14-March 9. The nine-match winning streak surpassed a pair of seven-match streaks from last spring.

For her career, Niedermayerova is 46-22 (.676) and is 14-13 against ITA ranked foes. Niedermayerova’s career singles winning percentage of .676 currently ranks third in school history. The product of Brno, Czech Republic, owns a 35-10 career mark in dual matches including a Big 12 mark of 15-5 from the number one position.

With her award on Tuesday, Niedermayerova becomes the fifth player in school history to earn multiple All-Big 12 singles honors and was a unanimous selection for the second straight season by the league’s coaches. She will be the second player in school history to make consecutive appearances in the NCAA national singles championship, joining Alena Jecminkova who was a three-time participant from 2000-02. Niedermayerova will be travel to Athens, Ga., for the national singles championships on May 23-28 at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.

Bonacic tallied her first career All-Big 12 selection after setting the pace for the Wildcats’ on the court this season. The native of Split, Croatia, is tied for the team lead with a career-high 22-9 record this season including a team-leading 7-2 effort in Big 12 action from the number two position in the singles lineup.

Bonacic, ranked No. 99 in the April 30 Campbell/ITA national singles rankings, was strong this spring, as she finished tied for the team lead with a 16-5 mark in dual matches including a five-match winning streak to close out the season. Dating back to the final three matches of 2010, Bonacic has won 35 of her last 42 dual matches and owns a career record of 43-14 in dual match play.
 
For her career, Bonacic has a 55-33 (.625) career record and is 38-28 in straight set matches. With eight more singles wins, Bonacic will move into a tie for sixth on the K-State career singles wins list. Bonacic’s career singles winning percentage of .625 currently ranks sixth in school history.

Bonacic garnered her first career national ranking prior to the start of the 2012 dual match season, checking in at No. 94 in the nation and No. 7 in the Central Region rankings. She reached a new career-high ranking of No. 65 after a straight set win over No. 22 Maho Kowase of Georgia in the season-opener and has been ranked for nine straight weeks.

K-State’s number one doubles tandem of Niedermayerova and Bonacic also garnered All-Big 12 honors from the league’s coaches. The duo finished with a 5-8 overall record and a 4-5 mark in Big 12 action. The duo tallied a three-match win streak together and were ranked No. 65 in the Campbell/ITA doubles rankings on April 30.
