Niedermayerova and Bonacic Receive NCAA Draws

Kansas State’s Petra Niedermayerova and Karla Bonacic received their opponents on Tuesday for the first round of the 2013 NCAA Division I Women’s Tennis Singles & Doubles Championships. The first round of singles will begin on Wednesday, May 22 at the Khan Outdoor Tennis Complex, while the first round of doubles will start on Thursday, May 23.

Niedermayerova, ranked No. 15 in the Campbell/ITA national singles rankings, is slated to play No. 25 Kristie Ahn of Stanford on Wednesday at 5 p.m. (CT). Niedermayerova owns a 2-2 record in her previous two NCAA Singles Championships appearances.

The winner of Wednesday’s match will advance to the Round of 32 on Thursday to face the winner of No. 20 Kyle McPhillips of UCLA or Maria Belaya of William & Mary.

Niedermayerova, a two-time Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) All-American and the 2011 Big 12 Player of the Year, is currently ranked No. 15 in the ITA national singles rankings. Niedermayerova, who was a unanimous All-Big 12 singles recipient for the third time this season, owns an overall record of 30-9 (.769). Her career-high 30 wins this season rank second in school history for wins in a season and she needs two victories to set the school record for singles wins in a season.

Niedermayerova earned a seeded position into the 2013 NCAA Division I Women’s Tennis Singles Championships, and by doing so, is automatically rewarded with ITA All-American status for the second straight season. She is the first two-time ITA All-American in school history.

In her career, Niedermayerova is 78-32 (.709) to rank second in school history for career victories. With two victories, she will set the school record for singles wins in a career and become the first player in the program’s history to reach the 80 win mark. Niedermayerova’s career singles winning percentage of .709 ranks second in school history. She owns a 51-14 career mark in dual matches, including a Big 12 mark of 21-8 from the number one position.

For the first time since the 1995 season and just the second time in school history, the Wildcats will be represented by its top doubles team in the NCAA Division I Doubles Championships. Ranked No. 26 in the national ITA doubles rankings, Niedermayerova and Bonacic earned one of 21 at-large bids and will face the No. 21-ranked Petra Januska and Chelsea Utting of Penn State on Thursday at a time to be determined.

The winner of Thursday’s match will advance to the Round of 16 on Friday to face the winner No. 25-ranked Robin Anderson and Skylar Morton of UCLA or No. 6-ranked Emina Bektas and Brooke Bolender of Michigan.

The K-State duo owns a 21-10 record and secured the 2013 Big 12 doubles title from the number one position in the lineup and earned All-Big 12 doubles honors for the second straight season. The tandem ended the season by winning 10 of their final 12 matches and finished Big 12 action with a 7-2 record.

Over the last three seasons when paired together, Bonacic and Niedermayerova are 34-26 and have been ranked together in the ITA doubles rankings for 12 straight rankings dating back to April 17, 2012. Niedermayerova and Bonacic were one of five doubles pairs from the Big 12 to be selected into this year’s field.

In combination with her results with both Bonacic and freshman Ivana Kubickova (5-1), Niedermayerova set the school record for doubles victories in a season with her mark of 26-11. In her career, Niedermayerova owns a doubles mark of 59-40 (.596) to rank ninth in school history for career doubles wins.

Bonacic has only played doubles this season with Niedermayerova, carding a record of 21-10 this season. In her career, Bonacic is 60-58 (.508) in doubles action and ranks tied for seventh in school history for career doubles victories.
