Wildcats Open Fall Schedule at OU Invite

MANHATTAN, Kan. – K-State women’s tennis will begin its 40th season of action this weekend at the OU Invite in Norman, Oklahoma. A number of Big 12 teams will participate in this weekend’s proceedings including Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Kansas and Texas Tech. Additional schools taking part are SMU and Wichita State.

As a team entering the 2014-15 season, the Wildcats will welcome back six players from its 2013-14 lineup headlined by senior Amina St. Hill. K-State finished the 2013-14 season with a 10-13 overall record and ranked No. 6 in the ITA Central Region rankings and No. 68 in the ITA National Team rankings.

St. Hill enters her final season in purple and white, a year after recording a career-best mark of 16-13. In dual match action, the product of Gothenburg, Sweden, tallied a record of 10-7 including a 5-4 mark in Big 12 play. St. Hill saw her biggest success last season in the number five position in the singles lineup with a record of 5-1. For her career, St. Hill is 36-41 in singles play and is 24-35 in doubles action.

Joining St. Hill as a returning letter winners from the 2013-14 season are: sophomores Iva Bago, Livia Cirnu, Palma Juhasz, Riley Nizzi and Maria Panaite. As freshmen in 2013-14, the quintet notched an overall record of 54-82 with Cirnu pacing the group with 16 singles victories.

The newcomers to the K-State lineup this season include: sophomore Sara Castellano, redshirt freshman Tegan Louw and freshmen Carolina Costamagna and Laura Hopton. Castellano joins the team after playing one season at McNeese State where she earned Southland Conference Freshman of the Year honors at the end of the 2013-14 season.

Louw was a member of the Wildcat roster last season, but missed the enter season due to an ankle injury.

The pair of fresh faces to collegiate tennis, Costamagna and Hopton, join the K-State roster from Cordoba, Argentina and North Ferriby, United Kingdom, respectively. Costamagna is the first Wildcat from Argentina since three-time letter winner Fernanda Da Valle in the 2005-07 seasons. Hopton joins her fellow countrywoman, Louw, on the K-State roster.

The OU Invite will be K-State’s first event under the direction of the seventh head coach in K-State women’s tennis history, Danielle Steinberg. Steinberg took the reins of the Wildcat program after serving as the head coach at McNeese State during the last two seasons.

In her two seasons at McNeese State, Steinberg guided the women’s tennis team to unseen heights with a 29-17 overall record including 2014 Southland Conference Coach of the Year honors and 2014 All-Louisiana co-Coach of the Year honors.

Following this weekend’s action in Norman, K-State will return to the state of Oklahoma for the ITA Central Region Championships Oct. 16-19 in Stillwater.
