Cats Tally Several Wins at Jayhawk Invite

LAWRENCE, Kan. Kansas State women’s tennis witnessed singles action success on Friday at the Jayhawk Invitational, as all six singles players registered at least one victory at the First Serve Tennis Center.

 

Leading the charge in singles play from the Red Flight was sophomore Vanessa Cottin. The Ouainville, France native tallied two victories and advanced to the semifinals of the main draw. Cottin’s first victory of the afternoon came against Holly Davis of UMKC, 6-2, 6-0. Her quarterfinal win later in the afternoon came over Shelley Johnson of Air Force, 6-1, 6-1. Cottin has now won three straight singles matches, matching the longest winning streak of her career from Feb. 2-12. She has now improved her season mark to 3-2 and her career record stands at 9-18.

 

In the Jayhawk Flight, sophomore Antea Huljev notched a three-set win over Wiveca Swarting of Nebraska, 7-5, 2-6, 10-9, in the opening round. This was Huljev’s second three-set win of the season and the seventh in 12 attempts. In the quarterfinals of the flight, Huljev was defeated by Kuni Dorn of Kansas, 6-4, 6-4.

 

Joining Huljev in the Jayhawk Flight is senior Katerina Kudlackova, who tallied her first win of the season with a 7-5, 6-3 win over Jenny Herring of Arkansas State in the back draw. In the opening round, Kudlackova fell in a hard-fought three-set match to Torrie Browning of Wichita State, 6-1, 4-6, 10-9.

 

Two freshmen, Andrea Straznicka and Masha Slupska, garnered wins on Friday. Straznicka carded her first career win in a K-State uniform in the opening round of the Blue Flight main draw. Straznicka defeated Rone’ Van Wyk of Arkansas State in straight sets, 7-5, 6-3. Straznicka was defeated in the quarterfinals of the flight with 6-3, 6-0, loss to Ma. Fernanda Martinez of Kansas.

 

Slupska tallied an opening round win over Anya Egorova of Wichita State, 6-7, 7-5, 10-4. This was the second straight win for the Kiev, Ukraine product. The winning streak was halted in the afternoon, as Slupska fell to Mary Weatherholt of Nebraska, 6-1, 6-1, in the quarterfinals.

 

Also in the Red Flight, freshman Petra Chuda tallied her first career win for the Wildcats. Chuda recorded a 6-0, 6-0 win over Caitlin Burke of UMKC in the first round of the back draw.

 

In doubles action, K-State tallied two victories in three matches for the day. The duo of Slupska and Cottin outlasted Sara Cassman and Tahlia Smoke of Air Force, 9-7. In the second victory, Straznicka and Chuda also set down a tandem from Air Force (Johnson and Majumi Voight) in a 9-7 decision.

 

K-State will continue action at the Jayhawk Invitational on Saturday morning at the First Serve Tennis Center.
