K-State Prepares for Fall Finale

MANHATTAN, Kan. Kansas State women’s tennis will have a full week of action, as the Wildcats will send a small delegation to the ITA Central Region Championships in Salt Lake City, Utah and the remainder of the roster will compete at the New Mexico Invite in Albuquerque.

“We want to build on the positive accomplishments of the last few weeks,” stated head coach Steve Bietau about what he hopes to gain from the final fall matches this season. “Our fall season is pretty short, but we have some players who have made great progress and the results to prove it. More importantly, there has been an overall change in the attitude of the group.”

Representing K-State at the ITA Central Region will be sophomore Antea Huljev and senior Katerina Kudlackova. Huljev enters the week with a 7-3 singles record this fall, winning five of her last seven outings. Kudlackova will look to end a five-match losing skid.

“This will be a chance for them to test themselves with some strong national-level competition,” said Bietau about his two charges at the ITA Central Region Championship.

Play at the Eccles Tennis Center begins on Wednesday and concludes on Sunday. The draws have yet to be determined for Wednesday’s action.

For the other five members of the roster, K-State will travel to Albuquerque to close out the fall campaign at the New Mexico Invite. The Wildcats will take on players from New Mexico, Missouri, Iowa State, Air Force, Western New Mexico and UTEP beginning on Thursday.

The quintet of Wildcats heading to New Mexico are: junior Natasha Vieira, sophomore Vanessa Cottin and freshmen Petra Chuda, Mariya Slupska and Andrea Straznicka. Combined, they have registered a singles record of 19-23 during the fall campaign, including a 13-15 mark by the three freshmen.

At the conclusion of the weekend, K-State tennis will return to the court in 2009 with the Bulldog Invitational in Athens, Georgia, Jan. 16-18.
