Castellano, Juhasz Travel to ITA Central Region

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Following almost a month from its first competition, K-State women’s tennis returns to action this weekend at the 2014 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Central Regional Championships in Stillwater, Okla.

A pair of Wildcats will represent K-State in the singles and doubles main draws at the ITA Central Regional, as sophomores Sara Castellano and Palma Juhasz will make a second straight trip to the Sooner State. A singles and/or doubles titles this weekend will clinch a berth into the 2014 USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships, held Nov. 6-9 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, N.Y.

Castellano made her K-State debut during the OU Invite in the middle of September and registered a 2-2 record. The product of Carmagnola, Italy split her results alternating between wins and losses. Paired with her record at McNeese State last season, Castellano owns a career singles record of 20-5. In the 2013 ITA Southern Regional while with the Cowgirls, Castellano advanced to the Round of 16.

Juhasz overcame a pair of singles losses to open the season to register a two-match win streak to conclude the weekend at the OU Invite. The native of Debrecen, Hungary, halted a personal 10-match skid with her first win of 2014-15. Juhasz owns a career singles record of 15-19. At the 2013 ITA Central Regional, Juhasz recorded a 1-1 record.

In doubles action this season, the tandem made their doubles debut together at the OU Invite. Despite the freshness of the pairing, Castellano and Juhasz came away from the event unbeaten with a 3-0 record.

Following this weekend’s action, K-State will travel to Des Moines, Iowa, to compete in the Drake Jamboree on Oct. 24-26. Head coach Danielle Steinberg will send a group of Wildcats to the Drake Jamboree that will include: senior Amina St. Hill, sophomores Iva Bago, Livia Cirnu, Maria Panaite and Riley Nizzi and freshman Laura Hopton.
