Weekly Notes

Kansas State will send a student-athlete to each coast this weekend, as sophomore Petra Niedermayerova will compete in the USTA/ITA Indoor Intercollegiate Championships, Nov. 3-6 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y., while junior Karla Bonacic will compete in the ASU Thunderbird Invitational at the Whiteman Tennis Center in Tempe, Ariz., on Nov. 4-6. Draws for both events have yet to be announced.

In her last competition, Niedermayerova took advantage of her selection to the main draw of the ITA/Riviera Women’s All-American Championships in Pacific Palisades, Calif., on Oct. 6-9.

Niedermayerova played some of her best tennis as a Wildcat, advancing to the semifinals of the  event by carding a 3-1 record and defeating three opponents ranked among the top-30 in the nation, including her first win over a top-5 foe in beating No. 5 Lauren Embree of Florida in the Round of 16.

The product of Brno, Czech Republic, is K-State’s first representative at this prestigious national event since Karina Kuregian in the fall of 1995. Niedermayerova will be one of four players from the Big 12 in the event.

Niedermayerova owns a fall record of 5-4 this season and has a career mark of 29-14 (.674) and is 24-9 (.727) in career straight set matches. In career matches against players ranked among the Campbell/ITA national singles rankings, the 2011 Big 12 Player of the Year is 10-6 including a record against foes among the top-30 of 6-4.

Bonacic will look to capitalize on her strong performance from the Kansas Invitational, as she captured the Draw A title with three straight sets victories. The native of Split, Croatia, is 4-2 this fall and owns a career mark of 37-26 (.587) including an 11-2 record in three-set matches.

Following the weekend’s diversified action, Kansas State will take a break for two months. The Wildcats will resume workouts in early January in preparation for the Bulldog Invitational in Athens, Ga., on Jan. 14-15. K-State will face Georgia on Jan. 14, followed by a match against Troy on Jan. 15.
