AMES, Iowa – Kansas State battled with Iowa State through the first two sets on Wednesday night, but could not hang with the No. 13 team in the nation in the third set as the Cyclones got the sweep. The Wildcats fell 23-25, 21-25, 14-25 as the Cyclones used scoring runs throughout the night to put the match away.
The Wildcats could not keep up with Iowa State’s offense as the Cyclones hit .282 for the match while K-State managed just a hitting percentage of .104. K-State (18-10, 7-7) was led by Kathleen Ludwig as she had another strong match for the Wildcats with nine kills on a .261 clip to go along with eight digs and four blocks. Kaitlynn Pelger also led with nine kills on the night. Lilla Porubek had six kills on the night but did not have any in the third set as K-State struggled with just nine in the final frame. Defensively, Kuulei Kabalis led the way with 12 digs. One highlight on the night for the Wildcats was the four aces by defensive specialist Tristan McCarty.
Iowa State (21-4, 12-2) saw Carly Jenson again have a stellar performance with 16 kills and an impressive .519 hitting percentage from her outside hitter position. She also posted a double-double with 14 digs. Kelsey Petersen and Victoria Hurtt also were strong for the Cyclones with eight kills apiece.
K-State and Iowa State battled back and forth in the first set as each team held the lead multiple times. Both teams traded small runs early on in the set before the Cyclones scored six straight points to extend the lead to 19-15. K-State would respond, however with a 6-2 run to tie the set at 22 apiece. Iowa State won the battle from there, though; scoring three of the next four points for the 25-23 win in the opening set. The Wildcats relied heavily on Ludwig and Porubek in the first frame as each posted four kills, and Iowa State went to its star player with Jenson posting five kills.
In the second set, it was all about runs again as the Cyclones opened up the frame with a 7-1 lead. K-State did manage to get within a point twice at 11-12 and 12-13, but then Iowa State began to pull away with a 10-2 lead. With Iowa State up 23-14, the Wildcats would begin to chip away at the lead scoring six straight, including a three aces by Tristan McCarty. A miscue by Pelger would give Iowa State point, and the Cyclones did not hesitate with a kill to take the 2-0 lead into the locker room at the break.
The third set saw the Wildcats hang briefly with the Cyclones before Iowa State took control. After K-State managed to tie it up early at 8-8, the Cyclones scored five straight and the Wildcats never scored consecutive points from then on. K-State could only sideout as Iowa State went on three more 3-0 rallies to close the match 25-14 and get the win on a 17-6 closing stretch.
