Wildcats Announce 2007 Fall Schedule

MANHATTAN, Kan. Kansas State volleyball will host 14 home matches in historic Ahearn Field House, including three during the Varney’s Invitational in early September as part of the 2007 schedule announced by head coach Suzie Fritz. The Wildcats will play 18 matches against 12 teams that reached the 2006 NCAA Tournament.


The Wildcats will open the 2007 season at the Wichita State Invitational on August 24-25. K-State will open with the host Shockers at 7:30 p.m. in Koch Arena. This will be a rematch from the 2006 season, as the Wildcats defeated Wichita State 3-0 in Ahearn Field House during the Varney’s Invitational.


K-State will conclude the weekend in Wichita with matches against Big West Conference champion and 2006 NCAA Tournament participant Cal Poly at 10 a.m., and finish against North Texas at 5 p.m. This will be the first time K-State will face Cal Poly and third meeting with North Texas and the first since 1984.


The team will make its home debut on Tuesday, August 28 against Houston at 6 p.m. in Ahearn Field House. This will be the third meeting with the Cougars in four years for K-State, with the Wildcats winning the previous two meetings.


K-State will then travel to the nation’s 50th state for the Hawaiian Airlines Wahine Classic in Honolulu on August 31 to September 2. While on the island of Oahu, the Wildcats will face three teams that reached the 2006 NCAA Tournament: UCLA (Aug. 31), Hawaii (Sept. 1) and Louisville (Sept. 2). UCLA was a 2006 Final Four participant, while Hawaii reached the Elite 8. This will be K-State’s fourth visit to Hawaii and the first trip since the 2003 season, when the Wildcats won the Big 12 title.


Kansas State returns to Ahearn Field House to conclude non-conference action with the Varney’s Kansas State Invitational on September 7-8. This year’s field includes Arkansas, Fresno State and Northern Iowa. Arkansas and Northern Iowa each received berths in the 2006 NCAA Tournament. The Wildcats played all three of these teams in their respective invitational tournaments during the last two seasons.


Big 12 action begins at Sunflower State rival, Kansas, on Wednesday, Sept. 12 at 7 p.m. The two teams concluded the 2006 regular season in Ahearn Field House with the Wildcats winning 3-0. K-State is 56-37-1 against the Jayhawks, including a 20-2 mark in Big 12 action.


K-State opens it home Big 12 slate with a two-match homestand on Saturday, September 15 against Baylor and Wednesday, September 19 against Oklahoma. Kansas State then travels to Boulder to face Colorado on September 22 and returns to Ahearn Field House to face Missouri on Wednesday, September 26.


The Wildcats will then hit the road for three their next four matches, facing Texas A&M (Sept. 28), defending national champion Nebraska (Oct. 3) and Iowa State (Oct. 13). The lone home match will be against Elite Eight participant Texas on October 6.


K-State begins the second half of its Big 12 schedule in Norman, Okla., on October 19 against the Sooners, followed by a visit to Columbia, Mo., to face the Tigers on October 24. The Wildcats return to the “Little Apple” to face Iowa State on October 27 before returning to the road against Texas Tech on October 31.


The month of November begins with a two-match homestand against Nebraska on Saturday, November 3, and Texas A&M on November 7. K-State makes a trip to Waco, Texas to face Baylor on November 10, but immediately returns to Manhattan to play Kansas (Nov. 14) and Colorado (Nov. 17). The 2007 regular season concludes in Austin, Texas against the Longhorns on November 24.


The 2007 NCAA Division I Women’s Volleyball Championship will be held in ARCO Arena in Sacramento, Calif., on December 13th and 15th.


A list of matches broadcast by 1350 KMAN, FSN Midwest and CSTV will be announced at a later date. In 2006, K-State had 23 of its 30 matches broadcast on 1350 KMAN, two matches tape-delayed on FSN Midwest and one match broadcast live across the nation on CSTV.
