Cats Strong in K-State Spring Invitational

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The K-State volleyball team wrapped up the K-State Spring Invitational at the Swinney Rec Center on the UMKC campus by winning eight of its 10 total sets played, including 2-0 wins over Rockhurst, Wichita State and Drake. The Wildcats split their matches, 1-1, against Creighton and Missouri State.

Rising junior Brooke Sassin led K-State in kills in three of the five matches as the outside hitter had 11 vs. Wichita State and 9 against each Creighton and Missouri State.

In the Creighton match (16-25, 25-22), Sassin hit .270 (9k-2e-26att) while tallying two digs and a block. Three other Wildcats -- Katie Reininger, Alyssa Schultejans and Bryna Vogel -- each tied for second on the team with four kills. Vogel also added two digs and two blocks. Redshirt freshman Devan Fairfield paced the Wildcats with six digs.

Against Rockhurst (25-16, 25-22), K-State hit .250 as a team while holding the Hawks to a .029 clip (19k-17e-68att). Schultejans notched 10 kills on a .250 hitting percentage, with six of the kills coming in the second set. Reininger added seven kills on a .500 clip while Sami Flattum recorded all four of her kills in the first set. Rising redshirt sophomore Mattie Batchelder had a team-best six digs and two aces.

After Missouri State hit .400 (13k-1e-30att) in the first set to win 25-22, K-State bounced back in the second by using a stout defense to win 25-15. The Wildcats held the Bears to a -.143 attack percentage (6k-11e-35att) in the second and had seven blocks. Sassin led the way in kills with nine, while hitting .390 (9k-2e-18att), and Flattum added six kills on a .460 clip (6-0-13).

The Wildcats fought off Wichita State for a 26-24 win in the first set before trumping the Shockers, 25-21, in the second. Sassin had a personal tournament-best 11 kills, eight of which were recorded in the first set when she hit .412 (8k-1e-17att). Vogel and Flattum each had five kills, with Vogel tallying her five on a .560 hitting percentage (5k-0e-9att). Rising redshirt junior Katie Brand led the team with eight digs while also adding two aces and one kill.

In the final match of the day, K-State beat Drake, 25-18 and 25-20. In the first set, the Wildcats hit .522 (14k-2e-23att) while their defense had four blocks and limited the Bulldogs to a .080 clip (9k-7e-25att). Vogel led the way with nine kills on a .318 attack clip (9k-2e-22att). Rising redshirt sophomore Brookelyn Langhaim was matched by Schultejans for second on the team with six kills. Kali Eaken, meanwhile, dropped in a team-best two aces and had six digs. For the entire match, K-State hit .404 (28k-5e-57att).

K-State returns to its spring scrimmage schedule on Saturday, April 18 when it takes on Minnesota at Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa.
