MANHATTAN, Kan. – A day after having three Wildcats selected to the Preseason All-Big 12 Team by the league’s coaches, the Big 12 Conference announced its coaches’ preseason poll on Wednesday and the K-State Wildcats were picked to finish third.

K-State was picked to finish behind the favorite Texas Longhorns and Iowa State. Texas was predicted to finish first for the fifth time in conference history and received eight first-place votes for a total of 64 points. Iowa State received one first-place vote to give the Cyclones a total of 54 points. K-State was only one point behind the Cyclones as the coaches anticipate a close battle for second place this year in the Big 12.

The Wildcats reached the Regional Semifinals of the NCAA Tournament last season after upsetting No. 2 Nebraska on its home floor in the second round. It marked K-State’s third visit to the Regional Semifinal and 13th NCAA Tournament appearance overall.

Last season, the Big 12 combined for the highest conference RPI as seven teams reached the NCAA Tournament. With the departure of Missouri and Texas A&M, Oklahoma and Baylor are the league’s other tournament teams and they followed K-State in the poll. The Sooners were selected to finish fourth ahead of the Bears in fifth.

K-State opens the 2012 season at home hosting the Varney’s Invitational on August 24-25. The first match is against UC Irvine at 7:30 p.m. on August 24. Season tickets and single game tickets remain on sale through the K-State Ticket Office. Tickets can be purchased online at kstatesports.com or by calling 888-221-CATS. Fans can also visit the ticket office in Bramlage Coliseum Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
