Purple-White Scrimmage Set for Saturday

MANHATTAN, Kan. Kansas State volleyball’s annual Purple and White Scrimmage will take place on Saturday, Aug. 18th, at 5:30 p.m. from Ahearn Field House. The event, which begins after the alumni match set for 4 p.m., is open to the public. Admission is free for both matches.

The 2007 Wildcats, who were recently picked to finish seventh in the Big 12 preseason coaches poll, return virtually all of the 2006 team after losing only one starter, Sandy Werner, to graduation. Six members of the squad will take to the court this season after having been a starter during the 2006 slate.

Seniors Angie Lastra (libero/defensive specialist), Lauren Rosenthal (defensive specialist/libero) and Stacey Spiegelberg (setter) will all captain the 2007 team in their final season with the Cats. Lastra finished with 474 digs last year, marking the fifth most in a single season in K-State history. Rosenthal hit career numbers during the 2006 season, as she tallied 364 digs, including a match high of 24 versus Texas in November. Spiegelberg notched a quadruple-triple, only the third in school history, during the year with 1,378 assists, 241 digs, 104 blocks and 102 kills.

Other notable returning letterwinners include juniors Megan Farr, Jenny Jantsch, Megan Kroeker and Leslie Townsend, who were all members of the 2006 Academic All-Big 12 squad. Junior Rita Liliom will return to the court after injuring her knee and sitting out the 2006 season. Sophomore Kelsey Chipman, a 2006 starter, set a Big 12 record in her first year for block assists in a five-game match with 15 at Colorado on Nov. 1.

The Wildcats have the addition of six new members, including transfer Nataly Korobkova, who was named the preseason pick for Big 12 Newcomer of the Year. Adding depth to the roster will be freshmen OH Sarah Allison, OH JuliAnne Chisholm, L Charissa Dugan, S Abby Fay and L Lauren Mathewson.

The 2007 season gets underway in Wichita, Kan., with the Best Western Shocker Volleyball Classic on Aug. 24-25. The Wildcats will first take on the Mustangs of Cal Poly at 5 p.m. on Fri., Aug. 24. The first home event is scheduled for Tues., Aug. 28th, as K-State faces Houston at 6 p.m.
