Reininger, Brand Earn Player of the Week Honors

MANHATTAN, Kan. - Two Wildcats, Katie Brand and Katie Reininger, each earned a Big 12 player of the week award on Monday as Brand was named the conference's top defensive player while Reininger was tabbed as the top offensive player.

The pair of redshirt sophomores played a key role in K-State's 3-1 win over Iowa State last week, with Reininger tallying 14 kills on a .522 hitting percentage and Brand notching a team-high 13 digs along with seven blocks, which matched Reininger for the team-lead.

The award is Reininger's first career honor from the Big 12 while it is Brand's second career Big 12 weekly award. Brand was named the conference's Rookie of the Week on Sept. 16, 2013.

Brand was the only Big 12 player last week to average more than three digs per set and 1.75 blocks per set as she ranked tied for second in blocks and sixth in digs. Reininger, meanwhile, was the sole Big 12 player to be ranked in the conference's top 10 in each hitting percentage (third), points per set (fifth), kills per set (ninth) and blocks per set (tied for second).

Reininger's .522 hitting percentage, which matched her career-high, was fueled by connecting on eight of her first nine attempts for kills, tallying a .889 hitting percentage in the opening set. In the second, she quickly reached double-digits in kills for the match after adding three more kills on four attempts.

Brand paired up her 13 digs with 42 assists to help her register her 12th-straight double-double--the longest streak in K-State history--and team-best 14th double-double this season. In conference-only matches, Brand is averaging 3.12 digs per set (ninth-best in the Big 12) and 1.12 blocks per set.

This marks the first time since 2010 that two Wildcats earned weekly honors from the Big 12 in the same week (JuliAnne Chisholm, Alex Muff on Sept. 20) while the six weekly awards given to K-State this season are the most ever in program history. Freshman Kylee Zumach has been named the Big 12's Rookie of the Week four times this season.

After a bye this past weekend, K-State (16-2, 3-1 Big 12) will return to action with a road match at TCU on Wednesday, October 15 at 6:30 p.m. The contest can be watched on FOX Sports-Southwest or heard on News Radio 1350 KMAN.
