Five Wildcats Named Academic All-Big 12

MANHATTAN, Kan. – The Big 12 Conference announced the 2010 Academic All-Big 12 Volleyball Team on Tuesday afternoon and five Kansas State Wildcats have been honored for their achievements in the classroom. Four Wildcats were selected to the first team with an additional selection to the second team.

Senior outside hitter JuliAnne Chisholm highlighted the K-State selections as one of three players in the conference with a 4.0 GPA. This is Chisholm’s second Academic All-Big 12 First Team selection and comes on the heels of her CoSIDA/ESPN Academic All-District First Team award last week. Chisholm is majoring in athletic training/pre-med, life sciences and gerontology.

Chisholm was joined on the first team by fellow senior captain Lauren Mathewson as she received the first team award for the third time, making the grade all three years she was eligible for the award. Mathewson also recently was named to the CoSIDA/ESPN Academic All-District Team making the third team. Mathewson will graduate in December with her degree in marketing.

Receiving Academic All-Big 12 honors for the first times in their careers were sophomores Caitlyn Donahue, Kathleen Ludwig and Alex Muff. Donahue and Muff were named to the first team while Ludwig received second team honors. Donahue is majoring in secondary education and Muff is studying journalism and mass communications while Ludwig’s major is elementary education.

K-State has now had a total of 81 Academic All-Big 12 selections under head coach Suzie Fritz in her 10 seasons at the helm.

To qualify for Academic All-Big 12 student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the previous two semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of their team’s scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.

The conference had a total of 51 student-athletes honored this season for volleyball with 38 on the first team. First team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 GPA or better and the second team are those who have a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.
